Summary

Hoping to close the gap with the competition, tech giantAMDpulled back the curtain on the Radeon RX 7900M, its latest flagship mobile GPU. The new addition to the RDNA 3 line ofAMDRadeon graphics cards comes with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, which puts it among the upper echelon of mobile gaming graphics cards.

The launch of the RX 7900 came over a month after AMD released theRadeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT graphics cards. These additions to the RDNA 3 generation of AMD GPUs came with 12GB and 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM respectively and were focused on filling the mid-range gap between the RX 7600 and the RX 7900 XTX models. With a focus on additional VRAM compared to cards such as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, along with improved ray-tracing performance compared to the previous RDNA 2 generation, AMD remains focused on closing the gap with Nvidia in the graphics card market by appealing to PC gamers looking for affordable upgrades in 2023 and 2024.

For gamers on the go, AMD released a new and enticing option to consider. At the time of writing, the RX 7900M is only available on Dell’s Alienware m18 gaming laptop, with a retail price starting at $2,799.99 through the manufacturer. While this is far from the cheapestlaptop deal on the market, Dell has paired the RX 7900M with AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX mobile CPU, which is a 16-core processor that can be boosted up to 5.4 GHz and use AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology to improve gaming performance. As for the mobile GPU itself, the RX 7900M has 16GB of VRAM, which is double that of the RX 7600M mobile GPU. In addition, the 7900M has a base clock speed of 1825 MHz, which can be boosted up to 2090 MHz depending on the game being played, and has a total graphics power of up to 180 watts.

The Radeon RX 7900M is targeted at 1440p resolutions, which puts it in the same category asthe aforementioned Radeon RX 7700 XTand the mobile version of Nvidia’s RTX 4080. Compared to the 4080, the 7900M is about 7% faster on average, particularly in raw rasterization. However, ray-tracing performance remained slightly more in Nvidia’s favor in titles such asForza Horizon 5andDoom Eternal, which saw the RX 7900M drop to 79 and 133 FPS respectively.
