xQc has been dominant asTwitch’s most-watched streamer since 2020. He hasn’t been number one every month, of course. Non-English streamers including Gaules, auronplay, ibai, and loud_coringa have had substantial followings, and events including Fextralife’s charity marathon, the League of Legends World Championships, and The International have taken over uncertain months. It seems xQc has been usurped his position atopTwitchonce more, this time by fellow English streamer Asmongold.
In all fairness, Asmongold hasn’t claimed the title of “Most-Watched Twitch Streamer” from xQc these past couple of weeks through normal means. It’s yet another event that’s led to Asmongold’s climb, though not an event like others. It’s theJohnny Depp v. Amber Heard defamation trialthat’s led to a massive increase in viewership for Asmongold, as the Twitch streamer has spent a significant amount of his time watching and commenting on the trial’s happenings.

Over the past month,Asmongold’s Twitch viewershipin terms of hours watched has increased 96%. Over the past three days, over the culmination of the Depp v. Heard trial, Asmongold’s viewership increased a staggering 562% for a total of 3.8 million hours watched. During these three days, Asmongold also had the top peak viewership on Twitch with a total of 448,000 viewers. The peak came as Asmongold watched the verdict for the Depp v. Heard trial be given live.
Claiming the top spot in terms of hours viewed on Twitch is certainly an impressive accomplishment, but by no means does it guarantee Asmongold will maintain this level of attention going forward. The trial has now ended and Asmongold’s spike in viewership was very closely tied to live coverage of the trial. Nevertheless, it’s an awesome accomplishment. Asmongold managed over twice thehours viewed as xQcover the past several days, something few channels can claim.
Part of what made coverage of the Depp v. Heard trial so attractive is a lack of new big video games to play. With no game available to juice viewership, streamers including Asmongold started watching the trial and found that it was very successful. It goes to show that evengaming-focused Twitch streamerscan become massive draws by streaming pop culture-related drama.
As of Friday, Asmongold is back to streaming video games. Today saw the launch ofDiablo Immortal, the microtransaction-heavy mobile version of the popular ARPG franchise. It’s controversial in its own right, but unlikely to bring back theTwitchnumbers that the trial brought in. Regardless, Asmongold will try and maintain the momentum he picked up into the coming weeks and months.
