WithAvatar: The Way of Wateron the horizon, the originalAvatarfilm is scheduled for a theatrical re-release. The titanic, James Cameron-helmed film has also unveiled a new Dolby Theaters poster ahead of its re-release.
Released way back in 2009,Avatarhas had several re-releases. As the highest-grossing box office film of all time, it’s been a no-brainer to bring it back to theaters several times, with each re-release adding to its gross. The theatrical experience provided bythe originalAvataris legendary, as the film spawned the 3D and IMAX craze of the ‘10s, with studios hoping to recapture that lightning in a bottle.

The re-release has also prompted the studio to release a new poster forAvatar, which is being released in 4K High Dynamic Range. The poster features a shot of Jake Sulley (Sam Worthington) holding a bow in Na’vi form, with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and the Pandoran Hallelujah Mountains in the background. A notable change is the font for theAvatartitle. Infamously, the first film used Papyrus font for its title, but it has since been replaced with a new font after much mockery of the design choice.
The re-release ofAvataris sure to keep audiences fresh on the plot of the original film come December’s release ofAvatar: The Way of Water. In preparation for the re-release,the originalAvatarwas removed from Disney Plus, likely to drive fans to see it in theaters. Other than physical copies of the film, the re-release is now the only way to watch a legitimate copy of the original and to re-capture the original, famed theatrical experience.
With one ofthe common criticisms ofAvatarbeing that it was largely forgettable in its plot and characterization, it’s probably a smart move to re-release the film before its sequel comes out, to create a more emotional investment inThe Way of Water. It’s been thirteen years since the original was released, and time has only made it more difficult to remember all the particulars of the movie.
Still,Avatar: The Way of Waterlooks to bejust as visually stunning as its predecessor. The technological improvements in the ensuing decade have paid off, and Pandora looks more real and alive than ever. Perhaps seeing the originalAvatarfilm in theaters will give fans a taste of how stunning its sequel may be in cinemas.
Avataris slated to return to theaters on Jul 10, 2025.
