Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access launch continues unabated, with developer Larian Studios rolling out updates month to month. A final release date for the completedBaldur’s Gate 3hasn’t been discussed yet, so Larian’s making the most of the situation and is putting out updates as they’re ready. The latest example isBaldur’s Gate 3’s Hotfix #10, which arrived for the game Thursday morning. It’s not a substantial update, butBaldur’s Gate 3players will appreciate its focus. Larian’s continuing to iterate on howBaldur’s Gate 3deals with dice rolls and specifically its “Loaded Dice” feature.
Loaded Dice, for those unfamiliar, is arecently added feature toBaldur’s Gate 3. Larian heavily prioritizes player feedback when it comes to changing gameplay or balance in its projects. It took note that manyBaldur’s Gate 3players were frustrated with the dice rolls in-game, so it added Loaded Dice. Turning on this feature would increase the player’s chance of getting higher rolls more often. The problem is,Baldur’s Gate 3players seemed to be even more frustrated with the Loaded Dice than before, even going so far as calling the dice “rigged” or even “cursed.”

The cursed aspect of the Loaded Dice is due to a design decision that Larian has now described. If a player using Loaded Dice goes on what Larian calls a “lucky streak,” they can incur what’s called an “RNG debt.” This debt is basicallyBaldur’s Gate 3saying that the player has been too lucky, so it needs to force a case of bad luck, too. This is what players are saying can be overly harsh, as players know that their good luck will lead to a forced reprisal fromBaldur’s Gate 3’s RNGinevitably.
The new hotfix forBaldur’s Gate 3is intended to improve the game’s Loaded Dice to provide frustrated players with the “best experience possible” given their preferences. Specifically,Lariansays that the hotfix disables RNG debt, but only for combat rolls. As such, combat won’t have a disastrous moment mid-fight that could go very badly. However, the debt will still go off outside of combat, assumedly.
Larian’s new hotfix also makes several otherchanges toBaldur’s Gate 3, though they’re all small changes. They mostly address some small stability issues, as well as changes to the Larian Launcher. Larian’s launcher will now have broader functionality for supporting its various games, and several big bugs for the launcher have also been fixed.
There’s no word regarding when Larian will be issuing itsnext major update forBaldur’s Gate 3. The last major update, the Druid update, arrived in February. Since then, Larian’s put out several smaller hotfixes at a rate of one every 2-4 weeks.Baldur’s Gate 3continues to improve, but Larian clearly has much more left to do before the RPG is ready for launch.
