There are few characters in theDC Universethat have more of a complex and convoluted history than Hawkman. The character has featured as an alien, a reincarnated Egyptian prince, and a keeper of the Dark Multiverse. It’s very hard to keep track of Hawkman, but he’s a brutal and fan-favorite character in DC Comics and one that makes hisDCEU debutinBlack Adam.

Thanks toBlack Adam, Hawkman has been introduced to a larger audience, with a blockbuster giving him the budget he deserves to show his impressive wingspan. Hawkman is comic-accurate in many ways for the DCEU film, but there are some notable differences that DC Comics readers will pick up on.

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Black Adam!

7Works With Amanda Waller

When audiences are introduced to Hawkman inBlack Adam, he seems to have a great working relationship with Amanda Waller. Waller has had quite the controversies under her belt as she helms Task Force X, known as the Suicide Squad. However, forBlack Adam, she seems to be more like DC’s Nick Fury, as she is involved in the lives of every hero and villain.

In the comics, Hawkman and Amanda Waller have barely shared a single panel of a comic book. Hawkman is a hero, and Amanda Waller is a government official who only works with villains in their black-ops missions. Hawkman’s time with the JSA is spent with other heroes rather than with Waller as a mission lead.

6Immense Wealth

Carter Hall is no stranger to money. He has been seen in the comics owning many houses across the world, as well as having great wealth through a variety of sources. Carter Hall is just one of many comic characters that have a great amount of money, butBlack Adamtakes it to the extreme without much explanation.

The DCEU film to debut Hawkman sees a large estate with plenty of green gardens and a beautiful mansion. Carter Hall has done well for himself, and it shows even more so when he has an underground base. His expenses seem limitless and vital to the JSA.

5No Kill Rule

Part of Hawkman’shatred for Black Adamin the DCEU movie is the fact that he uses his powers to kill people. Hawkman keeps telling Black Adam that heroes do not kill, and he cannot join their ranks if he continues down this path of relentless murder for the oppressors of Kahndaq. Hawkman’s heroic “no-kill rule” doesn’t exist for the character in the comics.

Hawkman isno stranger to killingand is rather ruthless in the comics. Those that are in his way or are seen as a great threat will meet the end of his fist and mace. Hawkman is pretty hardcore but doesn’t just go around killing anyone.

4Thanagar Origins

In the Egyptian desert, Teth-Adam, Nabu, and Prince Khufu found the remains of a spaceship. This spaceship was from Thanagar, which was riddled with hawk-life motifs. The Thanagarians are a species of hawkmen and winged humanoids, famed for their war conquests and Nth Metal, which is regarded as highly important in the DC Universe.

It’s never made clear if Carter Hall is from Thanagar or if he is a reincarnation in DC’sBlack Adam. The character states that he does not fear death, so perhaps he is letting on more than he knows. His reliance on and mastery of Nth Metal may make it clear that he knows he is not entirely of this world.

3Prince Khufu Kha-Tarr

Prince Khufu was alive during the reign of Ramesses the second. He was the very first of Hawkman’s line, as the character was bound to reincarnation. Khufu was killed after being stabbed to death with an Nth Metal knife, which began hiscurse of an immortal deathat the hands of Hath-Set, whilst he and his wife would be reincarnated.

What’s also interesting about these reincarnations is that the first Hawkman, Prince Khufu, was good friends with Teth-Adam. However, the DCEU movie does not feature the characters as friends with a past together, and they remain rivals with intense action sequences.

2Hawkgirl Troubles

Hawkman and Hawkgirl areinseparable in the DC Universe. Their souls are forever entwined and eternally betrothed to one another. They havea shared fate, in which they will always exist in the mortal world with reincarnation and inevitably find each other. However, their love story is not without its complexities.

In the original drafts for theBlack Adamscript, Hawkgirl was going to feature as part of the JSA. However, for reasons yet disclosed, she was cut. Considering how important Hawkgirl is to Hawkman, it’s surprising that the film does not reference her at all, so perhaps the two have a troubled relationship.

1Nth Metal Abilities

Nth Metal is one of the most important materials in the DC Universe. Hawkman uses Nth Metal to fly with his wings. The material is also indestructible and packs a great punch, which is why he uses it for both armor and weaponry. In the comics, Nth Metal has gravity-negating effects and is found on Thanagar.

There’s a lot of potential for Nth Metal, and it hasn’t even been explored fully in the comics. The latest development of Nth Metal is the fact that it can be used to unlockthe Dark Multiverse. For the DCEU,Nth Metalis just a part of Hawkman’s armory, and he flies a great big ship made of the stuff, meaning he must have plenty of it.
