Taking a modern game and de-making it to intentionally give it a retro look is something that has become popular among the modding community. With the likes ofResident Evil 7getting the demake treatment, and someone showing whatBioShock Infinitewould look like as a SNES game, there is room to imagine what contemporary releases would look like if they were released decades ago. On top of that is theBloodbornePS1-style project, which is proving popular since launching a few days ago, so much so that it’s attracted the attention of another modder.
In a post on Twitter recently, user Garden of Eyes has managed to take Lilith Walther’s recently released demake ofBloodborneand give it a slightly more up-to-date tweak. In particular, the main things they appear to have added to the game are ray tracing and given it a widescreen look, presumably to accommodate modern screens. In response, the demake’s creator has expressed joy at the work that’s been put into the mod, saying that it’s a “wild concept!”

A number of images attached to the tweet, as well as a video linked to YouTube, show whatBloodbornePSXlooks like with Garden of Eyes' additions. It does indeed make a difference when the reshade is added to it, as well as being put into widescreen. The inclusion of ray tracing also makes the lighting look that extra bit more spectacular. Of course, all of this was achieved without spoiling the original vision that Walther had when she first started the project. It also shows just how much the community is willing to help each other out.
Ray tracing is a huge deal when it comes to video game development, but it’s generally reserved for AAA releases. That’s not to say that only graphically stunning games are privy to it. After all,Minecraftrecently had a ray tracing version back in 2020, and the technology really does make a difference to a game’s lighting, even one that is intentionally retro-looking.
BloodbornePSXhad already been downloaded 100,000 timesjust 24-hours after it had was released. While it’s not a re-imagining of the full original gothic title, the few hours that it does represent give the game that mid-1990s, almostNightmare Creatures, vibe, which is still a faithful homage to FromSoftware’s 2015 release. The fact that there is now a ray tracing and widescreen mod for it only adds to the general appeal of it, and hopefully it will continue to be downloaded and played by thousands more.
