Call of Dutyhas hinted that 2023’s title may implement a change that could see players retain their items fromModern Warfare 2. 2023’s newModern Warfareentry is seemingly on the brink of an official reveal, as severalhigh-profile NBA starshave recently gotten the chance to go hands-on with the title.

After 2022’sModern Warfare 2, 2023 was originally supposed to the be first gap year in the annual blockbuster shooter franchise since 2004. According to some reports, instead of a new full game, Sledgehammer Games was set to deliver a small expansion forModern Warfare 2in the Fall 2023 window, holding fans over until Treyarch’s next big game in 2024. However, that premium DLC has reportedly evolved onto a fully fledgedCall of Dutytitle, and it’s recently been all-but-confirmed to beModern Warfare 3.

Call of Dutytook to Twitter with a poll asking fans if they’d want to see all their operators, weapons, and bundles fromModern Warfare 2brought over toCall of Duty2023. With both options in the poll being “Yes,” it’s clear that the decision has already been made by Sledgehammer. This also nearly confirms that this year’sCall of Dutywill indeed beModern Warfare 3, as it would be strange to bring overModern Warfare 2’s content into a non-Modern Warfaretitle.

While each newCall of Dutytitle since2019’sModern Warfarereboothas seen a fresh lineup of new multiplayer operators and weapons, this move makes sense considering this is potentially the first time twoModern Warfaregames are being released in back-to-back years. This is good news for players who’ve spent money on bundles and want to see them carried forward, however,Call of Dutybecoming ever more iterative is a valid concern for some fans. The platform-style offering that modernCall of Dutyhas become can certainly have its benefits, however, many feel that a new title should have its own distinct and unique collection of maps, weapons, and more.

SinceCall of Dutydid mention weapons carrying over in the poll, it’s unknown if the entire lineup ofModern Warfare 2’s weaponsare all making the jump intoModern Warfare 3.It’s also currently not known if all ofModern Warfare 2’s maps will be carried over as well, but considering just how iterative 2023Call of Dutytitle is shaping up to be, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see. That said, if operators, weapons, and maps are all being carried over, Sledgehammer Games would do well to ensureModern Warfare 3is bringing enough new content to the table to justify its evolution from DLC to a full, premium release. There’s definitely more to learn aboutCall of Duty2023 moving forward, and fans should expect to hear more about the title as August nears.
