Activision has hinted thatModern Warfare’s story could continue after the events ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This was revealed during a recent interview withCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s narrative director.
The story of the originalModern Warfaresubseries ended with the 2011Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3where Captain Price managed to kill Vladimir Makarov, and another important antagonist, General Shepherd, was killed by Soap and Price in the 2009Modern Warfare 2. However, Shepherd and Makarov are both seemingly alive inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3along withShadow Company CEO Phillip Graves, which could have major implications for the game’s story.

In an interview with The Washington Post, the game’s narrative director, Brian Bloom, claimed that theModern Warfarestory will extend beyond this year’s game. Bloom also confirmed that several character arcs have a long term future in the series, and will be instrumental in building future storylines as well. “We think of character arcs as going one way, but they can also fall off their arc, they can go backwards, people can evolve and devolve,” Bloom explained. They also mentioned how these arcs offer “rich, fertile ground to tell stories,” and said that the team was just getting started on extending thesestories beyondCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Activision is also introducing a new way for players to experienceCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s campaign with Open Combat Missions. These will allow players to customize their approach to campaign missions, where they can choose to go guns blazing or pick the “lights-out” approach by using stealth weapons. In addition to this, players will also be able to use several objects, weapons, and vehicles in the mission area freely to complete their objective. Furthermore, players who just want a standardCall of Dutyexperience will also be able to run these missions like the older games.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3is also bringing back 16 classic multiplayer maps from the 2009Modern Warfare 2, along with features like map voting and new perks as well. A popular multiplayer mode called War, that hasn’t been a part of the game sinceCall of Duty: WW2,is also coming back.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3will also get an open-world Zombiesmap, that will also allow players to team up with other squads against the undead.
