Civilization 6is considered by some to be one of the best strategy games of all time. However,Civilization 5gave it a run for its money, and some still consider the 2010 title the best in the series. Now, modders have broughtCivilization 6closer to its predecessor by restoring maps from the previous game.

TheCivilization 5 Scenario Packbrings eight classic maps fromCiv 5into the modern era. The maps included in the mod are British Isles, Eastern United States, Eurasia, Europe, Fertile Crescent, Mediterranean, Northeast Asia, and South Pacific. Each comes from one ofCivilization 5’shistorical scenarios, which depicted events such as the American Civil War, the Fall of Rome, and Japan’s 1592 invasion of Korea. The mod page also notes the maps have been “lightly updated” to include features fromCivilization 4. Modder Crumblus Crisp created the mod using the Yet (not) Another Bit Map Converter. It is available for download from the Steam Workshop.

This is not the only Steam mod bringingCiv 5intoCivilization 6. Another recent mod reintroduced the bonus players receive for being the first to circumnavigate the globe.Civilization 6acknowledges circumnavigation in theRise and FallDLC. However, the only reward is a few extra points of progress toward entering a Golden Age. The tragically-misspelledFirst to Circumnagivatemod by Sailor Cat grants an additional +1 movement bonus to all ships after completing a circumnavigation. This was a feature ofCivilization 5that, for whatever reason, never made it into the sequel.

Even Firaxis may be looking to the past forthe future ofCivilization 6. The new Barbarian Clans game mode adds more interactions between playable civilization and barbarians. This includes dividing them into multiple clans with unique traits and behaviors. This is not dissimilar to the barbarian leaders fromCivilization Revolution. It also allows them to settle and establish new city-states, similar to a popularCiv 4mod.

The Barbarian Clans modeis more in depth than either of those, adding a much more diverse range of interactions. Still, between mods and DLC,Civilization 6may be on its way to becoming the ultimate, comprehensiveCivilizationexperience.

Perhaps it’s only a matter of time before someone recreates the oldRhyse of Civilizationmods forCiv 3andCiv 4. Those mods attempted to create a complete historical simulation, with new civilizations rising and old ones fracturing throughout the game. That may be wishful thinking, but either way,Civilization 6fans have plenty of new and restored content to keep them occupied.

Civilization 6is available on Linux, Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
