Capcom’s beloved Nintendo DS gameGhost Trick: Phantom Detectiveis set to receive an HD remaster later this year, as announced in the latest Nintendo Direct. In recent years Capcom has been highlighting some of its more niche franchises thanks to the release of titles such asThe Great Ace Attorney Chroniclesand the upcomingMega Man Battle Network LegacyCollection. After the success of its recentAce Attorneyremasters, the publisher is now giving series creator Shu Takumi’s other cult classic project an HD remaster,Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detectivefirst released in Japan in 2010 for the Nintendo DS. The game was created by Shu Takumi, the creator of theAce Attorneyseries, afterhe departed the series withPhoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations.Ghost Trickis an adventure game that follows a man named Sissel who, after dying, uses his new ghostly powers to solve the mystery of his own murder. WhileGhost Trickdid receive a port for mobile devices in 2010that was later delisted, the game has never been ported to any other platforms since, leaving it a stranded and mostly forgotten part of Capcom’s handheld history. That is, until now, as the publisher announced as part of a Nintendo Direct presentation thatGhost Trick: Phantom Detectivewill be receiving an HD remaster for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this summer.
Not much is known about the port other than it will beadapting the dual-screen mechanics of the Nintendo DS originalto a single screen while also remastering the game’s 2D art. So far the remastered art seems to have been handled surprisingly well, with the developers cleverly retaining the original DS screen’s aspect ratio by adapting the UI into the sides of the screen.
Capcom’s recent focus on its classic IP spells good things for the diversity of the company’s line-up, with it still managing to pump out exciting remasters and smaller titles likeGhost Trickin a year also filled with major titles likeStreet Fighter 6andResident Evil 4. The Nintendo DS library also received some much deserved love in this recent Nintendo Direct with the announcement of theEtrian Odyssey Origins Collectionanda newProfessor Laytongame also appearing at the showcase.
