The next-gen console upgrade for 505 Games’Control: Ultimate Editionwill become available for thePS5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 2. TheUltimate Editionupgrade will feature two modes: Performance Mode, which offers 60fps and 4K output, and Graphics Mode, which lowers the game’s frames per second to 30 in exchange for the transparency and reflections provided by ray tracing.
505 recently updated their support page forControl: Ultimate Editionand hinted that the game will make use of the unique features of the PS5 DualSense controller. While specifics on what that entails are minimal, the game will at least offer “support for vibrations and triggers.” One can assume that this meansControl: Ultimate Editionwill support the controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, though this isn’t clearly spelled out.

In addition to the somewhat vague details about DualSense controller support,Control: Ultimate Editionwill also make use of thePS5’s Activity Cards, which allow players to jump to specific sections of a game from the console’s home screen. The PS5’s Help feature, which provides gamers with videos and other gameplay assistance directly from the console, will also be supported.
Control: Ultimate Editionhas experienced a bit of controversy since its announcement in August 2020. The version is essentially a repackaging of theControl: Deluxe Editionand offers the exact same content: thebase game and all DLC. Despite this, players who already own the game, including theDeluxe Edition, can only access the game’s free next-gen upgrade if they purchase theUltimate Edition.
505 Games explained that the next-gen upgrade was locked toControl: Ultimate Editionbecause technical concerns made it impossible to upgrade other versions of the game. This statement later seemed to be proven untrue when, in September 2020,owners ofControl: Deluxe Editionfound themselves temporarily upgradedto theUltimate Editionand then immediately downgraded again. This made it seem that providing the upgrade for owners of other versions of the game was as simple as flipping a switch, despite what 505 Games had said.
To make matters worse, one of the titles coming toPlayStation Plus in February 2021 isControl: Ultimate Edition. Some PlayStation owners now have a previous version ofControlthat they were told couldn’t be upgraded and theUltimate Editionthat they purchased solely for the upgrade, only to realize that a few months’ wait would have gotten them the next-gen upgrade for free with PlayStation Plus. And Sony is not keen on issuing refunds, even to those who bought the game recently.
Control: Ultimate Editionis available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and next-gen upgrades become available on PS5 and Xbox Series X on June 10, 2025.
