Dreamshas been out for over a year now and its community continues to use it for all manner of creations, including their own video games. These range from wholly original projects, likeMODI: Son of Thor, to fan-games based on existing properties, such asKingdom Hearts,The Mandalorian, and today’s subject,Sonic the Hedgehog.
TheSonicseries has been incredibly quiet for the last year or so in terms of new games. So, until Sega finally gets round to announcing/releasing one, eager fans can make do with thisDreamsproject, titledSonic Adventure: Dreams Edition. Created by users RichMenace_94 and 1 collaborator, it was actually published in February 2020, but saw a 2021 update this February and has been gaining traction since a new video of the game in action was released.

While its name is meant to embody the Dreamcast gameSonic Adventure, it clearly takes a lot of inspiration fromSonic Unleashed, using the Boost formula that began inUnleashed. Plus, many of the user-made assets almost looking like they were lifted straight fromUnleashed, including the enemies and Sonic’s character model. The game also begins in an open-world hub area, but it’s much larger and allows players to run at full-speed.
Aside from the hub, the video shows off two of the levels. The first, Sapphire Shore, seems to evoke Emerald Coast (the opening level ofSonic Adventure), even using the same music, before transitioning into a seaside town that greatly resembles Apotos, the beginning location fromUnleashed. The second level, Frantic Farm, looks to be wholly original, with one section having Sonic quickstep through a corridor made of giant bales of hay.
The project has, so far, been met with overwhelming positivity on both YouTube and theDreamswebsite, with many users complimenting how it looks and feels like an authenticSonicgame. There are reports of some bugs and glitches that the developers are no doubt aiming to fix.
With 2021 being the 30th anniversary of theSonicfranchise, it’s expected that a new game will release later this year. But Sega has yet to announce it or even really comment on its existence at all recently. There have been new rumors of a remaster ofSonic Colorsbeing in development, which many fans are hoping to be true.
There are plenty of other related projects in the works at the moment, such as a card game based on the series and a 30th anniversary comic book tie-in. Also,a sequel to the live-actionSonic the Hedgehogmovieis in production and is scheduled to release in 2022.
