Elden Ringcame out almost two months ago, and fans have figured out many of the game’s mysteries. Still, it probably holds a few other secrets that are carefully hidden all over the world, and it may be a while before players can uncover them all. VariousElden Ringfan theories have cropped up that aim to explain some aspects, with one relating to a major NPC.
Gideon Ofnir is one of the most importantNPCs inElden Ring. He appears at the Roundtable Hold, and players can talk to him to get more information on the shardbearers. Gideon plays a role in Nepheli’s questline, and he also serves as a main story boss near the end of the game. He is called Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing in this fight, and one player suggests a crazy theory about how Gideon knows everything.

A Redditor named VaneBorne begins explaining this theory by pointing toward Gideon’s armor set, which is full of depictions of eyes and ears. VaneBorne then connects his name to a species of beetles called Xylotrupes gideon, and in-turn, theTeardrop Scarabs. VaneBorne says that Scarabs also have eyes drawn on them, and they think these scarabs could be a way for Gideon to spy on the player.
They also share two maps that show the location of these beetles and wonder if it could prove how Gideon doesn’t know about some things. The post goes into further detail and even has a FAQ for users who want to know more about this theory. Essentially, VaneBorne concludes that theScarabs inElden Ringare Gideon’s surveillance drones, and this is how he knows so much about the world.
Users don’t appear convinced by VaneBorne’s supporting arguments for this theory. Many of them state that Gideon doesn’t know everything and continues his pursuit of knowledge until the end of the game. Some users mention thatGideon gained a lot of his information from the main character, and the Scarabs existed naturally inElden Ring’s world.
Some players spend time discussing the fight against Gideon, in which he uses magic attacks from otherElden Ringbosses. He reportedly only uses their moves if players talk to him about that particular fight, further disproving this theory. However, some users appreciate the effort VaneBorne put into this post, and it would not be surprising to see more such theories in the future.
Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
