Though Microsoft and Sony are preparing to change the gaming market through the release of their next-generation consoles, the comparatively simple social deduction gameAmong Ushas continued its rise as a viral sensation online. The mobile version ofAmong Usis nearly as popular asPokemon GOwhen it launchedin 2016, and U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez exploded onto Twitch with anAmong Usstream that pulled in near-record breaking numbers.
With that popularity has come a host of fan art and other projects. Animated takes on the game have been particularly easy to find, likely due to the simplistic art style of its characters, with one animator creatingcustomAmong Usdeath animations based on other video gamesand anime. An Indian animator who goes by Flash in Rahul on YouTube has instead leaned more into the creepy side of the game to celebrate Halloween.

Flash in Rahul uploaded their “Among UsHorror Trailer” on October 21, describing it as their “Halloween Special” when compared to various other short-formAmong Usanimations over the last month. The game is like a playable version of John Carpenter’sThe Thing(1982) with players having to figure out who is the Imposter in their midst before that Imposter kills them all. This horror trailer re-contextualizes the goofy in-game kills, turning them into actually somewhat grotesque displays.
Of course, to say the kills look grotesque is not to say the animation is bad - in fact, it captures the atmosphere of being trapped on a space station with a supernaturally-endowed killer quite well. It goes to show how much potential there is to the idea of twisting an otherwise cute aesthetic, also seen in anAnimal Crossing: New Horizonshorror movie trailercreated earlier this year.
Though the growing popularity ofAmong Ushas resulted in a lot of fan-created content flooding the Internet, it has also led to some issues for developer Innersloth, which cancelled its plans to createAmong Us 2so it could focus on improving the original.Innersloth is currently issuing fixes for political spam hacksthat have become rampant thanks to the upcoming U.S. Presidential Election.
However, those issues have not stopped the developer from working on new content to roll out to its fans, and that fanbase has been steadily growing.Dragonforce guitarist Herman Li said the band will likely playAmong Uson Twitch in the future, which is just another sign that the game is seemingly not going to slow down anytime soon.
