MARVEL SPOILERS AHEADAs part of its SDCC celebrations, Marvel has been incredibly forthcoming with fans. It has outlined not only the end of MCU Phase 4 and detailed all of Phase 6, but it has detailed three movies that are part of phase 6, with plenty of room for more.Fantastic Fouropens MCU Phase 6, while twoAvengersmovies are also slated, withSecret Warsseemingly capping it off.
Indeed, it’s an impressive slate of upcoming content, even including the official return ofDaredevilto the MCU. But for many fans,Fantastic Fouris the next big hurdle for Marvel. The actors, the directors, the story, and all of that are super important as the First Family enters the MCU. A lot of details have been left in the air, but recent Kevin Feige comments make the movie sound likeSpider-Man: Homecoming. This is huge if true, and it would be the best thing Marvel could do.

Marvel movies have a formula, especially origin stories. Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Black Panther, and more all see these heroes facing what amounts to their evil counterparts. Origin stories have their place, but now so far into the MCU, they need something new. That’s exactly whatSpider-Man: Homecomingdid. It does not tell the origin story of Spider-Man, as fans know all aboutBen Parker dyingand Peter being bitten by a radioactive Spider, and by foregoing these origin movie elements, Spider-Man: Homecoming told a true Spidey story that was fresh for fans. The ultimate payoff could even be when Aunt May gives him the great power and great responsibility spiel inNo Way Home; it feels more earned and definitive.
According to Kevin Feige,Fantastic Fouris not an origin story. Many fans know how the Fantastic Four came to be, and it should be simple enough to work into the framework of a new movie context without displaying those events. It’s not as common of a story asSpider-Man’s origins, but Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Susan Storm, and Johnny Storm become heroes after an experimental space flight exposes them to cosmic rays. It’s that simple and could easily be a passing line in a movie. Grimm gets the worst exposure, which changes his entire physical appearance, causing both himself and Reed Richards a ton of grief.
By skipping Spider-Man’s origin story, his “solo” movie debut in the MCU was much stronger than many heroes. Doing the same for theFantastic Fourmovie would be a great way to kick off Phase 6, the final phase of the Multiverse Saga, and it’ll be interesting to see how they contribute to the MCU, and where they appear, thereafter.
