Summary

A new FTC leak reveals that the critically acclaimed westernRed Dead Redemption 2is soon to be making its way to current-gen hardware.Red Dead Redemption 2originally launched in late 2018 to high praise, even earning itself a Game Awards nomination for Game of the Year. However, in the subsequent years the game’sOnlinecomponent struggled to find its footing compared to Rockstar’s wildly successfulGrand Theft Auto Online, and lost Rockstar’s support last year.

AlthoughRed Dead Redemption 2was widely celebrated at its release, the loss of support for its online mode sparked discontent among many fans. Coupled with thedisastrous launch ofGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionin 2021, sentiment toward Rockstar has been less-than favorable as of late. Most recently, Rockstar had released a port of the originalRed Dead Redemptionto PS4 and Nintendo Switch, which was met with disappointment over its hefty price tag of $50 for a simple port of a game released in 2010.

Despite Rockstar’s recent stumbles, fans ofRed Dead Redemption 2may be happy to hear about the game finally making its way to current-gen consoles natively. Aspart of a massive FTC leakfrom May 2022, which unfortunately revealed much of Xbox’s plans in the upcoming years, it was uncovered thatRed Dead Redemption 2will have a native Xbox Series X|S release sometime between January and March of 2024. Of course, sinceRed Dead 2is a third-party game, a native PS5 version should also be expected.

The specific document in the leak focused on potential games Xbox could attempt to bring toGame Pass on day one. As such, Xbox expects Rockstar to ask for $5 million per month to launch the port day one on Xbox’s service, if Rockstar is willing to strike a Game Pass deal. A current generation port ofRed Dead Redemption 2is very much in-line with Rockstar’s practices, as it did the same withGrand Theft Auto 5across several new console generations since its launch a decade ago. The question remains whether a native PS5 and Series X|S version ofRed Dead 2will warrant another full purchase, as the backward compatible versions of the title still look impressive.

With this native current-gen version ofRed Dead Redemption 2aiming for Q1 2024, it’s likely that fans could learn more before the end of the year, perhaps at The Game Awards in December. AlthoughRed Dead Redemption 3is rumored to be in the worksat Rockstar, the long awaited and hotly anticipatedGrand Theft Auto 6is all but confirmed to be the studio’s next major release.

Red Dead Redemption 2is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
