Genshin Impact, the open-world action RPG from miHoYo, launched on numerous platforms today, including PC, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android. The game lets playersexplore a massive worldalong a magical journey to reconnect with their long-lost sibling.
While the adventure ofGenshin Impactcan be played entirely solo, players also have the option to join their friends, though that option is not made available from the very beginning. Multiplayer is an unlockable option, and while the requirements are not particularly difficult, it can take players a fair bit of time to unlock.

Multiplayer inGenshin Impactis unlocked after reaching Adventure Rank 16. As opposed to the player’s character level, Adventure Rank is tied to the player’s account and can be checked via the menu. Adventure Rank is simply increased by finishing quests, though it could take players a couple of hours ofGenshin Impactbefore reaching Adventure Rank 16. This is likely to ensure players have fullygraspedGenshin Impact’s mechanicsbefore allowing them to set foot in another player’s world.
Once a player unlocks the multiplayer option, they have the ability toinvite up to three friendsto join them on their adventure, though not all of the game’s offerings are available when playing with friends. To invite friends, simply open the menu and select “Friends”, where players can any currently online friends using the same platform as them. Playing in a friend’s world restricts players from picking up some items, placing an offer to Statues of the Seven, or opening chests.
It is also possible toplay with friends via cross-playon other platforms, but this option is not quite as straightforward as playing with friends using the same platform. Instead, players will have to add their friends on other devices by entering the friend’s UID number, which can be found in the bottom right corner of the screen. This can be a bit of a frustrating process, but the option for cross-play is certainly a welcome inclusion toGenshin Impact.
Players hoping to be able to simply jump into the game and begin playing with their friends might be disappointed to find out this option is not available. Thankfully though, since this option istied to the player’s account, unlocking this ability will unlock the option across all characters under the player’s account.
