Some of the most recent relesaes in the biggest video game series out there have been less than auspicious. After all, it is strange times whenGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition,Battlefield 2042, andCall of Duty: Vanguardall havelower scores thanMy Friend Peppa Pig.
While two of the games above are entirely new releases, and thus carry some serious risk, one would suspect that theGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionwould be more of a sure shot. Unfortunately for players, Rockstar, and Take-Two Interactive, these remakes are proving much less satisfying than both their original incarnations and the mods players were making of those classic games.

GTA Trilogy - Definitive Editionwas not well received by players, and their opinions are not improving as the days go by. Riddled with bugs, glitches, missing features, and bad looking graphics, the three remastered games are now known mostly as disappointments. Just as disappointing was Take-Two’s move to send cease and desists to many modders who had created mods for the original games or were working on remasters themselves, while pulling the original games from digital retailers at the same time. Now,GTAmodders are fighting back against Take-Two, including one player creating his own remaster ofGrand Theft Auto - San Andreas.
A reddit user who signs their handiwork GHOSTinHELL is attempting to recreateGTA San Andreasfrom scratch with improved visuals. As of writing, it is not known if they are attempting to update any gameplay elements as well. This is more ambitious than an environmental mod, likeadding fog back toGTA San Andreas; GHOSTinHELL is apparently trying to rebuild the entire game to look good. It’s a monumental task, and one that Take-Two may well stop them from pursuing in the near future.
For the moment though, it looks like something for those disappointed in the official remasters to look forward to, and something made by the community to boot. Considering theremake ofGTA Vice Cityeven messed up the Rockstar Games logo, many would love to play a game that shows love for the series again.
One can hope, of course, that the remastered trilogy is fixed up as well, but that will certainly take a lot of time - perhaps as long as this mod. In the meantime,Rockstar apologizedand is bringing back the original games, so it’s clear the developer has heard player complaints. Now it remains to be seen is if it can do something constructive with them.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Editionis available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
