In a recent interview, Marcus Lehto, the co-creator of the originalHalo, went into detail on how theMaster Chiefwas originally created. The character was originally created for a strategy game and was referred to as the Super Soldier. Originally, the Super Soldier was just a tiny, polygonal model that followed alongside a tank that would later become the Warthog. As time went on, the developers wanted to explore the character within various settings and different types of gameplay.

By the time Bungie officially started developingHalo, the initial design of the Master Chief was different from his official character design concepts. One of the concept artists working forBungieat the time drew concept art that was more anime-inspired, with Master Chief looking more thin and agile. Though, this took away from what Lehto and the rest of the developers had in mind when making the character.

All things considered, the anime-inspired design of Master Chief sounds rather interesting, especially considering that Lehto admitted the developers built a character model using that design. Though, the official design has become synonymous with the greatest video game characters of all time, soMaster Chiefhas come a long way.
