Fans lost their minds when Blizzard announced it would be releasing World of Warcraft Classic back in 2017. One year later at its release, servers struggled to hold their digital doors open, with some managing massive queues of over 20,000. When people eventually got in, or changed servers altogether, they raced to beWoW Classic’s first level 60, optimizing their leveling for speed and ease while erasing any sort of difficulty that presented itself. Everyone was excited to trek through the Eastern Kingdom and Kalimdor once again, though it was clear that most of their excitement was reserved for the last leg of the game in legendary dungeons like Naxxramas and Molten Core.

Players seemingly forgot why they fell in love with the beloved MMORPG in the first place, and that was for the mysterious and large world that they slowly ventured into and learned about as they fought their way to the end. That’s because before, players could just live anew with help from the Spirit Healer. Now, that’s off the table, and it’s a stark reminder that the game that once wrought players' hearts can be hard, especially when clinging to a single life.

World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore is a Walk Down Memory Lane

The difficulty ofWorld of Warcraft Classicis what made it so memorable. Back in the day, leveling was core the experience, and it wasn’t easy. Every level, talent point, and gear upgrade mattered immensely. When players achieved any upgrade, they were sprinkled with bits of dopamine and survivability to keep them marching forward to Blackrock Mountain and the Plaguelands. That was amplified by the world’s mysteries that could only be solved through investigation and curiosity. Azeroth is as well documented as the real world now, but with the introduction ofClassic Hardcore, players are forced to find new and unique ways to play through the lands they know in hopes of surviving againstWorld of WarcraftClassic’s most deadly enemies.

No one can talk aboutWorld of Warcraft Classicwithout mentioning community. Working together with others to achieve greatness inWorld of Warcraftwas never more important as it was in the game’s early days. The sense ofcommunity inWorld of Warcraft Classicwas strong, but it quickly dwindled. WithClassic Hardcore,that sense of community has returned, and stronger than before. There are endless parties of players teaming up for even the smallest tasks, joining forces to push one another toward another level.

The incentive to stay alive is tenfold, and players work together to ensure everyone lives. This also means that low-level content is back on the table:World of Warcraftqueststhat were once skipped are being completed again, people are in trade chat trying to sell low-level gear that was once vendored, and people are stopping to smell the Peacebloom as opposed to forging a path of fire in hopes of reaching the end.

Nostalgia runs deep forWorld of Warcraftplayers, and especially for those in theClassiccommunity. Many say the original Vanilla experience of 2004 through 2006 can’t be rekindled, and they’re right; memories burn brighter in the mind. But withClassic Hardcore, people are forced to go back to the game’s roots to survive the arduous journey tolevel 60 inWoW Classicwith only a single life to live. While this may only resurrect a part of the game’s originality, it’s still enough to rekindle a bit of what once was.Classic Hardcoreis everyone’s last chance to get a glimpse of what Vanilla really was, so fans should enjoy it while it lasts.
