The worldwide phenomenon and entertainment industry giant,Pokemon, has become so ubiquitous that it is almost impossible to venture down any media avenue without seeing some representation of the monster capturing franchise. With the constantly evolving roster ofPokemon, extended by each new video game release, the sheer abundance of characters often leads to interesting fan creations. In one such endeavor, aPokemonfan has combined Glalie and Scyther to create a chimera of sorts, with an entirely unique design.
Many will be aware of Scyther, who, as a Gen 1Pokemon, has been around since the franchise’s inception back in 1996, and has featured in a wide range games, as well as one of the main Pokemon used by Tracy Sketchit in the original anime series. While Ash had a Glalie in the anime, its run on his roster was fairly short lived, and its appearance in Generation 3 certainly makes it slightly less known. Glalie is, however, one of a smallselection of Pokemon to receive a Mega Evolution, with Scyther’s evolution, Scizor, also possessing the ability to Mega Evolve as ofPokemon X and Y.

Reddit user and artist Chunkylow posted up an awesome interpretation of Glalie and Scyther’s fusion, using the body structure of Scyther to form its base. Texturally, the fusion resembles Glalie, with its signature silver and black coloration and crystalized formations giving the Pokemon an almost metallic look. Chunkylow described the combination as being “kinda odd,” and noted that they thought it looked a bit like “a serial killer.” Its fierce expression and jagged spikes certainly make it look like a force to be reckoned with, and with Glalie being astrong ice type Pokemonthanks to its Mega Evolution, this fusion could be a powerful ally to a burgeoning Pokemon master.
Many commenters were excited to see a mixture of ice and bug type, with others siding with Chunkylow’s reservations about its scary appearance, and suggesting to “kill it with fire.” This artwork isn’t Chunkylow’s first foray into Pokemon fusions, with an Instagram profile full of interesting mashups, like Doduo and Bellsprout and Alakazam and Rayquaza. They also tackle Digimon characters, with open commissions for those who want to see their favorite monsters from either franchise brought together into a beautiful amalgam. While other artists havecreated Pokemon fusions before, Chunkylow’s art style certainly separates their interpretations from the pack.
Pokemon fusions are not only interesting because of the aesthetic possibilities of combining Pokemon, but due to the nature of the franchise’s type system. Fusing different Pokemon together can result in some interesting concepts, with a ice and bug type Pokemon offering interesting potential move sets and strengths. It helps that Chunkylow chose to use Scyther as a base, as it is likelyone of the coolest looking bug Pokemon, however, the sheer breadth of choice that Pokemon offers artists will always allow for wonderful reimaginings, no matter which character is being interpreted.
