Fans of Sucker Punch’s open world superhero seriesInfamouswere excited earlier today when #Infamous became one of the top trends worldwide. Many thought this meant that a newInfamousgame had been announced, possibly even for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, it turns out that theInfamoustrend has nothing to do with a new game in the dormant franchise.

It appears as though theInfamousTwitter trend started because of a tweet by IGN. IGN tweeted a short video of PlayStation franchises that have been dormant for awhile, listing games likeResistance,Killzone, and of course,Infamous. It seems fans would be most excited about a newInfamousgame, if the worldwide trend is any indication, though it’s unlikely that a new entry will be announced any time soon.

Sucker Punch Productions is currently working on thePS4 exclusiveGhost of Tsushima, which appears to be a rather massive undertaking and is set to be one of the last big first-party games for the console. Sucker Punch has been working onGhost of Tsushimafor about six years now, so it stands to reason that the company’s next game, whatever it may be, is quite a long way from release.

Of course, it’s possible Sony could have another studio work on a newInfamousgame instead. After all, Sucker Punch only worked on theSly Cooperseriesduring the PS2 era, with the IP handed off to another studio for the PS3Thieves in Timerelease. TheInfamousIP is clearly popular, and while Sucker Punch itself may not currently have the time to work on a new entry, that doesn’t mean it can’t be trusted with another studio.

Sony has confirmed that it’s not abandoning theInfamousIP, but that doesn’t mean it has immediate plans to return to it either. For fans who were excited to seeInfamoustrending on Twitter, this may be disappointing news, but perhaps a new game will come at some point during the PS5’s life cycle. It’s not uncommon to see franchises revived on new hardware, as new consoles give developers the freedom to pursue gameplay features and mechanics that weren’t possible in previous generations.

While fans wait for news on a newInfamousgame, they may want to keep a close eye on upcoming Sony events. ThePS5 is rumored to be revealed in February, and while it seems unlikely that a newInfamousgame will be announced then, fans won’t know for sure unless they tune in.
