Henry Cavill may not be playingSupermananymore, but fans shouldn’t count him out of the DC Universe. James Gunn has revealed that the company is still trying to find a new role for him within the new slate of developing films.Cavill returned asSupermanforBlack Adam’s post-credit scene as a cameo.Dwayne Johnson stated that Cavill’s return as Supermanwas non-negotiable, and fans were excited about the possibility of his return. Two months after that return, it was announced that the DCU will introduce a new, younger Superman moving forward. In the tweets, he confirmed that Cavill is still in the running for a future role. “We just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future,” Gunn wrote. Gunn, who isrunning the DC Film division alongside Peter Safran, also confirmed that Ben Affleck was entertaining discussions about directing a future DC project. “Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.”
Cavill’s return as Superman had been uncertainfor some time. Speculation about the future of DC Films has run rampant since Gunn and Safran have taken over. Though no official plans have been announced, Gunn, who is active on social media, has been vocal that their plans aren’t solid yet. Rumors suggest that a total reboot could be in the cards, and with the cancellation ofWonder Woman 3,alongside the suggestion that Jason Momoa may play Lobo rather than Aquaman moving forward, a full reset is a real possibility.
It’s not knownhow projects likeBlue Beetlewill be affected. The project was greenlit under Walter Hamada, who had previously run DC Studios. There may or may not be references to the wider DCEU in the film, and if the DCEU is no more, then that raises questions about the canonicity of the project. It would be unfortunate if the project is released as a one-and-done deal. Not only does the project have a lot of promise, but it’s also the first Latino-led superhero film.
