Duneactor Josh Brolin has recently shared his thoughts on Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated blockbuster. The actor viewed the final cut of the film and had the greatest level of praise possible for Villeneuve’s latest work.
Brolin, who will play the character of Gurney Halleck, told ACE Universe, “They screened the movie for us when it was finally done, and I was so blown away. I think I can safely say it’s a masterpiece. It truly is a cinematic masterpiece, what he was able to do and hold all those characters and give all those characters their time of day, but then also hold the story on top of that, and do justice to the story.”

Based on the 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert,Dunefollows heir Paul Atreides, a young man who accepts the stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis (a.k.a. Dune), which also contains the most valuable substance in the universe known as the “spice” that gives its users extraordinary abilities. Brolin’s character, who is Paul Atreides' weapon teacher, is a loyal friend to Duke Leto Atreides and the rest of the family.Dunewill be Brolin’s 2nd time working with the visionary Villeneuve, as the two previously worked on the critically acclaimed 2015 thrillerSicario,which was written by Taylor Sheridan and centers on an FBI agentplayed by Emily Bluntwho joins a government task force to aid in the response to the escalation of the Mexican cartel.
Brolin added that having everything come together in the final cut ofDunecreated such a memorable experience. “And the lighting, which was done by Greig Fraser [director of photography]… It just was one of those moments where it all comes together,” Brolin shares. “No Country [For Old Men] was kind of like that too, where it was like ‘Did you have a feeling that something was going to be great?’ and you’re like, ‘No, I’m having a good time.’ I love doing this, but you don’t know until you see it how great it’s going to be.” Brolin isn’t the only that has had early praise for the film.NomadlandandEternalsdirector Chloé Zhao praisedDuneafter seeing an early screening, saying what Villeneuve had created blew her away. Brolin’sDuneco-star Jason Momoa, who will play Duncan Idaho in the film, also added his overwhelmingly positive thoughts in a recent interview, saying that he wants a 4-6 cut of the film. Taking into consideration some of these early reactions, it seems thatDuneis shaping up to be one thrilling, large-scale adventure that should have plenty of fans rushing back to the big screens.
Villeneuve, who signed on to direct in 2017 under the one condition that he would be able to directtwo parts of hisDuneadaptation, recently revealed some of his thoughts onDuneand if a part 2 will come. As most suspect, the second chapter ofDunedepends on the box office success of the first, but Villeneuve is confident it will happen. Villeneuve’s other notable works include 2013’sPrisoners, 2016’sArrival, and 2017’sBlade Runner 2049.
Dune’s star-studded ensemble also features Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides,Zendaya as Chani, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, andThe Suicide Squad’s David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries.
Dunewill have its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in early September and is set to release in theatres and for streaming on HBO MAX on June 25, 2025.
