There is a danger even greater, however: the Curse of the Abyss. The deeper one descends into the Abyss, the greater the threats one faces, but returning to the surface is a danger in itself because ascension is what triggers the curse. This can leave the player feeling like there’s no way to win. The Curse can be dealt with, however. Here’s everything the player needs to know about surviving the Curse of the Abyss.

The Curse Of The Abyss Explained

The Curse of the Abyssafflicts those who ascend too quickly. The easiest comparison is to the bends – the real-life phenomenon that occurs when divers surface too quickly. Any upward movement can bring about the Curse, whether ascending a slope, stairs, or the sheer surface of a wall.

The spreading Curse is readily identifiable by the purple aura that appears around the edge of the screen. The darker the numbers of the Depth Meter, the stronger the Curse is growing, showing howthis brutal survival mechanicis progressing. On the Abyss’s First and Second Layer, the Curse causes vomiting. While this might seem like a mild effect for something with such a sinister name, vomiting causes a substantial loss of Hunger and Stamina, which can jeopardize the player’s survival if they aren’t prepared.

If the character’s Hunger and Stamina deplete fully, combat will become impossible, making them easy pickings forthe Abyss’s monsters. If the character falls prey to the Curse on deeper Layers, however, its effects are more severe: hallucinations, blindness, the reversal of the player’s controls, and the rapid approach of death.

How To Deal With The Curse

The key to surviving the Curse of the Abyss is simple: ascend slowly and stop when necessary.Ascending is always harder than descending inBinary Stardue to the curse, especially since the player will typically have to scavenge for food on their way back up after a particularly long trip into the Abyss. Packing plenty of food will help should the player succumb to the Curse on the First and Second Layers. Using either a Bandage or Hemostasis Leaf can help the player recover from the Curse on the Fourth and Fifth Layers, so it’s a good idea to keep those items on hand if possible.

The Curse of the Abyss triggers when the player ascends 10 meters in a brief period of time, whether that ascension is done all at once or in installments. To avoid the Curse the player must always be aware of how much they have ascended. Players who enjoy bunny hopping in games must beware: frequent jumping can trigger the Curse too. To prevent the curse from triggering, the player will need to stop ascending and wait for the Curse timer to reset. If the player’s only choices are between taking an attack or two from enemies or suffering the Curse, it’s often better to just take the hits, especially on the lower Layers. By doing so, the player may just find outwhat happens after the hero wins.
