Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have made it clear to fans that skins inspired by outfits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are a priority forMarvel’s Avengers. It would be unfair to say thatMarvel’s Avengers' developer has not been at work on other features, but there hasn’t been much word on what players can expect while these MCU-inspired cosmetics are frequently announced.

Still, MCU-inspired skins are what many fans have looked forward to sinceMarvel’s Avengers' launch, and fans may be satisfied with the amount of content they have received thus far. YetMarvel’s Avengerscould continue to adapt these cosmetic outfits from beloved movies and shows with an emphasis on gameplay features, rather than pure aesthetics. If skins added functional gameplay mechanics exclusive tothe outfits worn inMarvel’s Avengers, its gameplay could be affected positively and significantly.

Marvel’s Avengers Should Add an MCU John Walker Skin

With respect to an outfit from the MCU thatcould potentially make its way intoMarvel’s Avengers, one in particular would distinguish itself from the character’s traditional identity. John Walker, otherwise known as U.S. Agent, debuted in the MCU with Disney Plus’The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Walker is a former Captain in the U.S. Army who takes up Steve Rogers' unoccupied mantle as Captain America after Sam Wilson parts with Rogers' shield.

Walker is emotionally compromised, hot-headed, and feels pressured under the weight of Captain America’s insurmountable legacy. Walker succumbs to this pressure and takes super soldier serum in order to compete physically, and becomes a conflicted antagonist that Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are forced to subdue. While this whole backstory wouldn’t bedepicted in aMarvel’s Avengersskin cosmetic, it would be a fantastic suit choice that could represent another character entirely.

Marvel’s Avengers' skins are standard cosmetics with no alterations to gameplay. Further, fans have noted a lot of inconsistencies, for exampleBlack Widow and Hawkeye’s default hairstylesbeing used predominantly in their MCU-related outfits, despite the live-action iterations having different hairstyles. This may not seem like the biggest error onMarvel’s Avengers' part, but when adapting content it is an inconsistency that fans will acknowledge.

Moreover, a radical change could make an MCU John Walker skin more diverse than anyMarvel’s Avengerscosmetics before it.Marvel’s Avengerscould give Captain America another long-ranged weapon with John Walker’s pistol, signifying him as his own character with a unique mechanic instead of a standard reskin. With the theoretical skin purchased or earned, players could fire Walker’s STI Perfect 10 pistol as well as hurl the shield, or even combine them by firing while blocking with the shield.

Marvel’s Avengers Can Diversify Gameplay With Skins

Such a feature would likely involve a substantial gameplay overhaul, but if done well,Marvel’s Avengerscould lean into its MCU influencesand add more diversity at the same time. For a Walker skin it would be the pistol, but if characters had even more fluid weapon swaps, players could potentially see Captain America wielding Mjolnir.

If players entered a multiplayer lobby with both Captain America and Thor, it would be exciting to see theirAvengers: Endgamecounterparts sharing Mjolnir for combined attacks. As for skins specifically, Thor could receive the enchanted Stormbreaker axe that hisAvengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgameiterations possess. Not every character fromMarvel’s Avengerswould necessarily need to receive a new weapon swap skin, but it would add a unique feature to skins beyond their aesthetic.

There’s only a miniscule possibility that this feature would make its way toMarvel’s Avengers. Team takedowns are also a highly fan-requested feature that have yet to be added, and there is a lot from Crystal Dynamics' gameplay that players desire to see. With any luck,Marvel’s Avengers' next roadmapwill detail exciting content to look forward to, even if peoples' specific wishes are not granted. Either way, weapon swaps being tied to cosmetic skins would surely add an incentive for players to buy them in the future.

Marvel’s Avengersis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
