Reddit user Max4005 added Herobrine toMinecraftvia a data pack, finally making the presence of this famous character real.Herobrine is part ofMinecraft’s creepypastathat became famous for bringing a dark story to the lighthearted game. To summon Herobrine using Max4005’s data pack, players need to build a totem with gold and place redstone torches, then place a netherrack block and “sacrifice” an obsidian block. After that, Herobrine will appear every 20 minutes in the player’s vicinity but will disappear if the player looks at him too long. To remove Herobrine the player must “sacrifice” a diamond block on the character’s totem. For the tech-savvyMinecraftplayers, Max4005 has placed comments in each line of code of the data pack. This way, players can adjust Herobrine’s behavior as desired.
The first “evidence” of Herobrine’s existence inMinecraftappeared in 2010. AMinecraftForum user shared the story of a player who claimed to have seen a white-eyed entity after playing one ofMinecraft’screepy music discscalled “13.” The “White Eyes” story spread around the forum and became highly popular amongMinecraftplayers. Many theories emerged about whether Herobrine was real or not, with one of them describing the character as Notch’s dead brother.Minecraft’s creator later spoke out and denied having a dead brother, but this has never stopped Herobrine from being widely popular.
Although he has never officially been a playableMinecraftcharacter or mob, Herobrine has gained many appearances inMinecraftthanks to mods created by players. The diversity of fan art goes beyond that, dedicating animations and even songs like the well-known “Have You Seen the Herobrine?” to the character.
