Bungie remains hard at work continuing the development ofDestiny 2, rolling out seasonal content while also focusing on major expansions. Currently, Bungie is working towards the release ofThe Witch Queenin 2022. However, Bungie’s also confirmed the development of an expansion to followThe Witch QueennamedLightfall. What comes afterLightfallremains to be revealed, but as Bungie Design Director Jacob Benton makes clears, what is certain is that there will be more.

Speaking to Japanese outlet 4gamer, Benton discussed the current state ofDestiny 2as well as what’s coming next. In his responses, Benton says that the eventual release ofLightfallis unlikely to completely wrap up the story thatDestiny 2is telling. As such, it makes sense for there to be further content released forDestiny 2even beyondLightfall. The context of the response implies that at least one more major expansion would followLightfall’s eventual release.

What Benton’s response was also clarifying is where Bungie currently stands on thepotential development ofDestiny 3. Benton says that it doesn’t make sense to try and tell the concluding chapters ofDestiny 2in a new game when Bungie already has theDestiny 2platform built for more content. As such, Bungie has no current plans forDestiny 3. Everything it’s working on is planned to be rolled out forDestiny 2going forward for several years.

As for whenDestiny 2players can look forward to this content arriving, Benton doesn’t make it explicit. However, going off of Bungie’s current rhythm forDestiny 2expansionsit could be some time. IfThe Witch Queenlaunches in 2022 as its currently scheduled, and each subsequent expansion takes a year if not longer, thenLightfallwould launch in 2023 and the unannounced expansion would have to follow in 2024. In other words,Destiny 2’s longevity persists.

Further evidence that this is Bungie’s current unannounced roadmap is the company’s recently revealed plans to launch a new IP in 2025. That would give Bungie the next four years to “finish” the current story it’s telling inDestiny 2, then leaving 2025 open to market andrelease the new Bungie IP.

There’s always the caveat that plans could change, of course.Destiny 2is doing well right now and Bungie is clearly confident that it will continue to do well. But it’s impossible to predict if 3-4 years in the futureDestiny 2will continueto pull the number of players it currently does. Expansions could also take longer than expected, leading to expansions being pushed further and further out. Basically,Destiny 2fans should enjoy what’s currently available and otherwise trust Bungie to plan out the future as it sees fit

Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
