Summary
Mortal Kombat 1has been enjoying a pretty successful few weeks after its impressive launch just a month ago. While the critics were quick to giveMortal Kombat 1some pretty glowing reviews, it’s the fans that really make or break a fighting game, and thankfully, most seem to be enjoying all thatMortal Kombat 1has to offer. That being said, though,Mortal Kombat 1’s current metacould use a bit of a shake-up. There are only so many times a player can face off against a Scorpion, Smoke, and Raiden one after the other.
Well, it looks like players might be getting just that, asMortal Kombat 1’s first DLC characteris set to launch sometime next month. And while franchise staples like Quan Chi and Ermac are set to join the roster soon, it’sInvincible’s Omni-Man that’s first up to bat, and if his recent reveal trailer is anything to go by, thenMortal Kombat 1’s guest characters may be some of the best in the entire franchise, and that includesThe Boys' Homelander.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Omni-Man Is Setting the Bar High for Homelander
Released just a few days ago during New York Comic Con,Mortal Kombat 1’s Omni-Man reveal trailer made it crystal clear that the character is in completely safe hands, with NetherRealm Studios being obvious fans of the source material. From the moment the trailer starts and J.K. Simmons' voice can be heard, it’s immediately evident that NetherRealm is putting a great deal of time and effort intoMortal Kombat 1’s guest characters, and that’s only exemplified more during the rest of the trailer.
The rest of Omni-Man’sMortal Kombat 1reveal trailer is jam-packed with references and Easter eggs to the character’s appearance inInvincible. This trailer gives a brief tease of Omni-Man’s two Fatalities, with the first being a head squeeze that’s essentially been taken shot-for-shot from the animatedInvincibleshow, and the second also being a near-perfect recreation of one of the show’s most iconic moments, with Omni-Man bringing Scorpion down to a subway tunnel and ramming him head-first into an oncoming train. Omni-Man’s Fatal Blow inMortal Kombat 1is also a huge reference to the source material, showing the comic villain pummeling his opponent into the ground and crushing their skull with a double-fist punch.
But while these iconic moments are easy to get right, it’s much harder for NetherRealm to capture the essence of Omni-Man during justMortal Kombat 1’s moment-to-moment gameplay, though from the small snippets revealed so far, it seems like it’s really nailed it. Everything fromJ.K. Simmons' voice performanceto Omni-Man’s parry that sees him zip around the Earth and smack his opponent within a second to even just the way Omni-Man holds himself and hovers slightly above the battlefield shows that NetherRealm understands not only what goes into making the character, but also what fans would want to see from him in a fighting game.
IfOmni-Man’sMortal Kombat 1reveal traileris anything to go by, then it seems safe to assume that both Homelander and Peacemaker will also receive the same level of care and attention and exude the same level of fan-service. Fans can probably expect to see some of Homelander and Peacemaker’s most iconic moments forged into Fatalities and Fatal Blows, and their general demeanor, animations, and moveset will probably be equally authentic and faithful to the source material. And much like J.K. Simmons, John Cena will be reprising his role of Peacemaker forMortal Kombat 1. Though Antony Starr still hasn’t confirmed whether he’s in the game or not, it seems incredibly likely that NetherRealm is trying its very best to make it happen.
Mortal Kombat 1is available now for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
