Morty Smith, from the belovedRick and Mortyfranchise, has finally droppedin the massively popular Warner Bros Platform Fighter,MultiVersus. First Player Games, the developer of the title, have put a lot of work into Morty, and it shows as he’s pretty technical overall.

Because of his variety of unique mechanics inMultiVersus, from Grenades to summoning Rick’s Ship and more, Morty’s best Perks are unpredictable. So, let’s go over the best selection found for this Bruiser-type character so far and why these Perks were picked.

Best Perk Setup

First off, let’s lay out what the current “meta” Perk Build for Morty is in Season 1:

Now, at a glance, this Perk layout makes Morty look like a purely projectile-based character, but that’s actually not the case.As aBruiser-Classcharacter,Morty is in the thick of it quite a bit, it’s just that his best “tools” are his projectiles, and these Perks help make them even better. Plus, let’s be honest,Morty’s hitbox isn’t exactly “perfect” at the moment either.

I’m More Than Just A Hammer

Now, as of writing this, Morty hasn’t been out very long, so it’s hard to say with 100 percent confidence whichSignature Perkof Morty’s is “the best.” But, even this early, players are still positive that it’s a competition betweenI’m More Than Just A Hammer, andOh That’s Still A Grenade. Morty’s third Signature,Extra Fleeb Juice, is basically useless as it currently stands, though it does have some interesting mechanics tied to it that could become worthwhile with some adjustments.

Meanwhile,I’m More Than Just A Hammerchanges Morty’s Side+Attack into a spinning nightmare comparable to something like Finn’s Backpack Attack. It’s great for making a lasting hitbox in the middle of the stage during a Teams match, even if it leaves Morty exposed.

That said, the only reason the Hammer-based Signature Perk is winning out overOh That’s Still A Grenadeis that Morty’s Passive ability,Sci-Fi Explosive Technology, is currently disabled. When this Passive is eventually activated in a future update, Morty’s Grenades will become a lot scarier. But, in the current version,I’m More Than Just A Hammeris the more popular pick.

Ice To Beat You

Anytime theIce to Beat YouPerk is brought up, a similar Perk,That’s Flammable Doc, is usually also mentioned. It’s always “either-or” with these two Perks, and it depends on personal preference and overall playstyle for which one should be equippedacross the entire roster.

That’s Flammable Docis a great Perk for aggressive-type players who want to steadily build up damage percentage over time, whileIce to Beat Youis great for players who want to slow down their opponent just a tad so that their moves connect easier. And, with how slow to wind up and telegraphed Morty’s attacks are,Ice to Beat Youseems to be the better choice. Plus, he actually has more projectiles than one would expect withAw Jeez Snakes, his Grenades, andPower of Earth, sohe can trigger this Perk constantly.

Make It Rain, Dog

Since Morty’s Grenades are such a crucial part of his kit and will become even more important once his Passive is implemented, it seems obvious that the Perks that influence how easy these Grenades are used and thrown would be part of his best build.Make it Rain Dog, quite simply, makes it easier for Morty to chuck Grenades and set them up around the arena.

Additionally, it makes it quicker to aimPower of Earth, and it’s harder for enemies to react toAw Jeez Snakes. Granted, if Morty is on a team with a character who has little to no Projectiles, it makes much more sense to run something likeSlippery Customerinstead, but more often than not,Make it Rain Dogis the right choice.

Coffeezilla

Coffeezillais basically a permanent Perk slot on Morty, just like it is on characters like Bugs Bunny or Velma. This Perk gives a Passive 10 percent reduced Cooldown to all of Morty’s abilities, of which he has a lot. Just to make it clear,Coffeezillaaffects a ton of his moves, such as:

So, even if Morty players want to switch out a Perk for another one to counter-build a specific matchup, it’s very rare that they’ll switch out Coffeezilla.

Alternate Perk Options

Of course, it’s still very early for Morty, and players are absolutely still figuring him out. And, as the meta evolves and people really hone down what attacks of Morty’s are the absolute best, his Perk setup might change. With that in mind, here are some alternate options for players who weren’t the most jazzed about the Best Perk Recommendation above or just want some options for counter-picking enemy teams:
