WhileOverwatch 2’s PvE mode will inject fresh gameplay elements into the game, some fans are more excited about the new lore it could explore. The game has explored the stories of specific heroes extensively through animated shorts and comics. Cassidy is a notable beneficiary, as he starred in the “Reunion” short and “Deadlock Rebels” novel with Ashe. He was also featured in the “New Blood” comic series with Ana, Baptiste, and Zarya. SomeOverwatch 2heroes, however, got the short end of the stick, with their lore only discussed briefly in a video or character description.

While many players may think Zenyatta is the hero who needs the most love, the devs have confirmed that he’s getting a lore update soon, as the new PvE campaigns willexplore Zenyatta and Ramattra’s relationship. A hero that does need some more lore content, however, is Mei. She had her own origin story video called “Rise and Shine” and was part of the “Zero Hour” short. Players get to know about her whereabouts after Zero Hour through journal entries on theOverwatchwebsite, too. However, there doesn’t seem to be future content aimed at exploring her story.

How Overwatch 2 Can Improve Mei’s Lore

For those unfamiliar with Mei’s backstory, she was cryogenically frozen for nine years along with her other colleagues inOverwatch’s ecological research facility in Antarctica to survive after a polar storm hit the base. Rescue never came, and years later, Mei found herself to be the only survivor when the cryogenic pods opened. Upon re-establishing communication lines, she received theOverwatchrecall signal from Winston. This led her to leave the base with Snowball, her robot companion, and brave the harsh weather of Antarctica to travel to meet with the other heroes atWatchpoint: Gibraltar.

Since she rejoined theOverwatchteam, Mei made it her mission to travel the world to renewecological research networks across the globe and to stop the threats to the planet’s ecosystem. She documents her journey through her journal, titled “Mei’s Adventure,” which was published on theOverwatchwebsite back in 2015. A great way to explore her story further is throughOverwatch 2’s PvE missions, wherein Mei and other heroes can reclaim research bases from enemy factions who have taken over them inOverwatch’s absence.

While Talon may be the obvious choice for these PvE missions, it may be interesting to see theOmnics of Null SectorannexingOverwatch’s ecological research facilities. They could use the existing research and technology to further their cause or sabotage the effort against climate change, making the Earth inhospitable for humans. The Omnic baddies guarding the base could be decked out with modified endothermic blasters, similar to Mei’s weapon. This would make her a key figure when combatting them, as she would have knowledge on how to take them down.

Mei’s and Snowball’s Antarctic Adventures Deserve to be Chronicled, Too

There’s not much information on the time between Mei’s departure from Ecopoint: Antarctica to Watchpoint: Gibraltar. She only had Snowball, a sled of supplies, and her Endothermic Blaster with her during her journey. It would be exciting to see her possible struggles with surviving in the harsh and cold climate of the area before finding a way to travel to Gibraltar. She could even stop byOverwatch 2’s Arctic Peninsulato see if anyone is inhabiting it. A great way to tell this story outside of a dedicated PvE mission is through a novel or comic book. Mei could encounter problems related to elevated sea levels, melted ice caps, and struggling wildlife to highlight the devastation that climate change has caused.

Overwatchhas over 37 playable heroes, so it’s understandable that some characters may be waiting in line for a lore update. In Mei’s case, it should be sooner rather than later, as Blizzard has revealed that she will be receiving a small rework of her kit soon. A PvE mission or comic featuring Mei would be the perfect companion for the announcement of her improved skill set. Regardless of whether it dives into her journey through Antarctica or gives insight into her personal life, another thing fans know little about, it would be a worthwhile addition toOverwatch 2’s lore.

Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox One Series X/S.
