Overwatchis still managing to entertain fans, despiterumors of a sequel, five years after its initial release. The team-based shooter has managed to keep players satisfied with its engaging character roster and fun mechanics. However, there have been changes to the game in recent months and the “Hero Rotation” has split fans. The latest rotation may annoy some players as popular characters are unavailable this week, others will welcome a new challenge.

The idea of a hero rotation is on the surface a good way to encourage players to expand on their skill set. Despite this, some players would rather use certain characters for competitive games and do not like the concept. The system of making characters unavailable hasbenefitted underutilized heroesand there likely has been a new lease of life in the game for some players. It will be interesting to see howOverwatchfans respond to the upcoming hero rotation that leaves out some popular heroes.

The heroes McCree, Widowmaker, Reinhardt, and Brigitte are all out of rotation as of April 12th. These heroes have impressive play statistics with McCree and Widowmaker being the first and third most-played Damage characters on the game. Reinhardt also has a formidable playtime, appearing in 60% of games. Brigitte has a less substantial following with a play rate of 43.2%. While someOverwatchplayers will miss their favorite players, the developer of the game, Activision Blizzard, have reasoned, “[We want] theOverwatchLeague and Competitive Play to mirror each other as closely as possible and make a more consistent viewing and play experience.” The rotation is certainly mixing competitive play up.

The team-based shooter hasadded plenty of contentand this feature has kept players on their toes. It will be interesting to see how much content continues to be provided in the game as the developer switches focus to a sequel. It seems that there are still several ideas that are being implemented inOverwatchand they may feature in the sequel if they are successful.

Some fans will hope that rotations do not feature in a sequel, with that said very little is known aboutOverwatch 2and the direction it will take. While players wait for more information about a sequel, they can become skilled with many characters while this rotation series continues. Equally, they can wait until April 19th when these heroes return.

Overwatchis available for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
