A luckyPokemonfan uncovered a rare treasure while cleaning out their closet recently: a special editionPokemon YellowGame Boy complete with a carrying case and a copy of the game itself. Decades before it graced the Nintendo Switch withPokemon Scarlet and Violet, thePokemonfranchise took the world by storm on the original Game Boy.Pokemon Red and Bluewere a breakout hit when they launched in the late 90s, inspiring a generation of children to “catch ‘em all” and spawning a mega-franchise that is still going strong to this day.
For the updated Game Boy Color handheld, Nintendo and developer Game Freak releasedPokemon Yellowin 1998. While containing the same world and plot as the previousRed and Bluegames,Pokemon Yellowmade several changes to better emulate thepopularPokemonanime that was airingat the time - namely replacing the player’s Starter Pokemon with a Pikachu that followed them around and swapping out certain characters with their counterparts from the show. To celebrate the launch ofPokemon Yellow, a limited-edition Nintendo Game Boy was released that came with the game - and it sells for nearly $200 today.

Mightydispread854’s find comes at an interesting time, considering that yesterday was Pokemon Day 2023 - a celebration of the franchisethat included several bigPokemonannouncements. To commemorate this milestone, thesoundtracks to the originalPokemon Red and Blue(as well asYellow) were made available to stream on the Japanese Pokemon Sound Library website - though it was sadly unavailable in the west.
Nonetheless, the timing couldn’t have been better for Mightydispread854 to find their copy ofPokemon Yellowandthe limited-edition Game Boy Colorit was bundled with during a seemingly normal closet cleaning. Making this find even more impressive is the condition that said Game Boy was in when it was uncovered, as it looks just as it did when it was first sold in stores in 1998 - just as thePokemonfranchise was at the height of its popularity all around the world.
