Summary

An imaginative and talentedPokemonfan has created a unique piece of art which fuses Mew and Magikarp together, creating a rather unusual yet interesting result.Pokemonfusion art is one of the more popular subgenres of fan art for the long-running franchise, with the Mew and Magikarp fusion being the latest well-executed example.

Mew and Magikarp were both introduced as part ofPokemon’s very first generation, and are commonly associated with their far more powerful offshoot and evolution, respectively, in Mewtwo and Gyarados, althoughMew’s moveset inPokemon Scarlet and Violetmakes it much more useful in battles than Magikarp.

The impressivePokemonfusion fan art of Mew and Magikarp comes from a Reddit user named OldGeezer247, who posted their work to one of the site’s majorPokemonforums. The artwork excels at combining the majority of the major features of each Pokemon, although it more closely resembles the former as opposed to the latter. The fusion art largely keeps Mew’s form intact, but replaces its skin color with Magikarp’s reddish hue. Magikarp’s tailfin can be seen at the end of the tail, along with Magikarp’s exaggerated barbels and crown-like dorsal fin on its head.

The starkest change from a Mew to a Mew and Magikarp fusion is the eyes. While Mew normally has very large blue irises - as seen inone fan’s incredibly realistic Mew doll- this fusion fan art replaces them with Magikarp’s tiny black pupils, giving the aptly named “Mewkarp” a bit different of an expression. Many otherPokemonfans appear to be enjoying the artwork, which has garnered well over 500 upvotes within a few hours of being posted. The post also includes a second piece of fusion art, which combines Gastly and Wooloo to create “Gastwool.”

While combining Mew and Magikarp may seem like a random pairing, another fan came up with a nearly identical concept, but with a much different result. A fan createdPokemonfusion art of Mewtwo and Magikarp, but as a three-dimensional sculptured model. This fusion leans a little more heavily into Magikarp’s traits, creating quite the strange result which the artist themselves labels as “cursed.”

Several comments on the above Mew and Magikarp fusion fan art post suggest that the artist should create sprites for their fusions inPokemon Infinite Fusion. For those who may be unaware,PokemonInfinite Fusionis a fan-made gamewhich essentially does what its title says: allowing players to fuse together different Pokemon in a seemingly infinite number of combinations. The game has reportedly spiked in popularity in recent months, further strengthening the popular concept within thePokemonfan community.
