APokemon GOplayer has recently taken online to express their confusion with the fact that the game wants them to go to Mexico. This unexpected suggestion appears to be linked with the recent arrival of theChoose Your Fighting TypePokemon GOResearch Task.

The newly introducedPokemon GOSeason of Rising Heroesruns from March 1 through June 1. As was the case with such quarterly events in the past, this latest season introduces a plethora of a new content, including raid battles, events, Pokemon, and time-limited Research Task missions.

And while one of the latest such quests is currently only available to players in Mexico, it would appear Niantic has also extended the offering beyond the North American country, albeit inadvertently. Namely, at least one U.S.-based player has recently taken to social media to report thatPokemon GOtasked them with going to Mexico over this past weekend. Elaborating on a viral Reddit post from March 5, user Baroque1750 explained that they received the unexpected Timed Research tasks while they were in San Diego, which is located some 17 miles (27km) from the Mexican border.

Much like Niantic’s previous GPS-powered title,Ingress,Pokemon GOuses a grid-based map with predominantly square region boundaries to determine player positions in the real world. As such, the game isn’t always able to identify the correct country in which a given player is residing if they are close to a border. Its geolocation issues can be further exacerbated by the technical limitations of consumer-grade GPS solutions, as underlined by the fact thatGPS drifting has been troublingPokemon GOsince its 2016 debut.

That combination of factors is most likely behind this erroneous suggestion of a trip to Mexico. While there have been no other reports of similar problems with the Choose Your Fighting Type Research Task, some of the players reflecting on the issue claimed they were previously able to complete similar country-specific missions after the game mistakenly placed them in a differentPokemon GOregion.

That notwithstanding, this is not the first issue stemming from the March 1 debut of the Season of Rising Heroes. A vocal portion of the game’s fandom has recently taken online tovoice their annoyance withPokemon GOTeam Rocket Gruntsfollowing the start of the new quarterly event, pleading with Niantic for an ability to disable the Team Rocket PokeStop battles whose frequency was intentionally boosted as part of the new season’s bonuses.

Pokemon GOis available now on Android and iOS.
