Summary

After the success ofPokemon Legends: Arceus, it seems highly likely that another game in that style is in the works, and if recent leaks and rumors are to be believed, it could be set in the Gen 5 region of Unova.Pokemon Legends: Arceustakes players to a past version of Gen 4’s Sinnoh Region known as Hisui where never before seen forms of critters could be found and gives them the option of choosing one of three starters pulled from different generations. With this precedent set, it’s safe to assume that a sequel set in Unova’s past will also give players this type of choice.

Players transported to the land ofHisui inPokemon Legends: Arceushave the option of choosing between Gen 2’s Cyndaquil, Gen 5’s Oshawott, and Gen 7’s Rowlet. Additionally, each of these starters received a regional Hisuian Form for their final evolution, gaining a new design and typing to help them feel more unique to the Hisui Region. Since none of these mons originate from Gen 4 or the Sinnoh Region, it’s likely that aPokemon Legendsgame set in Unova won’t feature any of the Gen 5 starters, which makes determining which mons will be featured as starters all the more interesting.

The Pokemon Most Likely to Be Starters in a Legends Unova Game

Right off the bat, theGen 5 starters Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawottcan already be ruled out sincePokemon Legends: Arceusdidn’t feature any starters from the Gen 4 games and did already include Oshawott as an option. It’s also safe to assume that the other Gen 2 and Gen 7 starters are off the table since they had representatives inPokemon Legends: Arceusalready. Given their iconic status, the Gen 1 starters are also unlikely to appear, since including one but not the others would overshadow the other starters taken from different generations.

With these generations of starters eliminated, Gens 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 remain, but it seems unlikely that any of the Gen 9 starters would be included given how recently they appeared asstarters forPokemon Scarlet and Violet. That leaves four total generations of starters to choose from; it’s also unlikely that more than one would be pulled from the same generation. This means that one Grass type, one Fire type, and one Water type can be chosen from any combination of these four generations to make up the starter trio for aPokemon Legends: Arceussequel.

Given these restrictions, the most likely candidates for a starter trio would be Gen 3’s Torchic, Gen 4’s Turtwig, and Gen 6’s Froakie. This combination of mons represents a nice cross-section of the series' starters that includes both bipedal and quadrupedal creatures, as well as mons that could easily receive new types in their regional final evolutions while still fitting within thePokemonstarter type triangle. The one point against this starter trio is that Blaziken and Greninja have received special forms in the past such as Mega Blaziken andAsh-Greninja, so Unovan Forms would stack representation heavily for them.

Despite this flaw, these three still represent a solid mix of popular mons that could easily be a selling point of a newPokemonLegendsgame. These three critters still deserve the attention and expanded lore that comes with inclusion in aPokemon Legendsgame, and their status as the starters for aPokemon Legendsgame in Unovawould help establish a connection between Unova and the region of their original generation. However, with only one game setting the precedent for speculation, this prediction could very well be wrong if Game Freak decides to take the nextPokemon Legendsgame in a new direction.
