Sony Pictures’Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Cityarrives in theatres this week and the studio has upped the marketing game just before the premiere. In the latest featurette released by the studio, the film’s director and the producer at Capcom talk about working together and how the upcoming film is loaded with Easter eggs, a fact that is bound to draw in fans of the game franchise.
TheResident Evilgame franchise is among Capcom’s best sellers and over 120 million units of the game have been sold cumulatively around the world since release. Severallive-actionResident Evilfilmshave been released in the past, butResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Citytakes fans back to the first two games in the series, bringing in some of the most-loved playable characters.

In the new featurette, director Johannes Roberts refers to the integral role that Capcom played in bringingResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Cityto life. Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who has previously worked on producingtheResident Evilgames, worked alongside Roberts throughout the process. Roberts is a fan of the games himself, as Kobayashi reveals. As someone who appreciates the original content of the games, Roberts has included several Easter eggs into the film for fellow game fans.
It is already known that the film’s plot will be based on 1996’sResident Eviland1998’sResident Evil 2. However, Kobayashi reveals that Roberts has even “snuck in one of his favorite elements from a later game.” He hopes that the fans of the games will be able to find it. He refers to the film as a “newResident Evilworld” created by Roberts, which combines elements from the game with fresh concepts created specifically for the film.
In past interviews, Roberts has revealed thatResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Citywill not be an entire adaptation of the plot from the first two games. Kobayashi goes on to confirm this and hopes that true fans of the franchise will appreciate the differences that they have incorporated into the script. It is already known thatthe famous villain fromResident Evil 2, Mr. X, will not be a part of the upcoming film, which makes one wonder what other changes the film has made to the original plot.
