A recent update to Activision’s social media banner has fans wondering if a brand-newSpyro the Dragongame is in development. The originalSpyro the Dragongame was released on the PlayStation back in 1998 and became a breakout success for futureRatchet and ClankandMarvel’s Spider-Mandeveloper Insomniac. The spunky purple dragon stood alongside fellow platformerCrash Bandicootas one of thedefining mascots of the original PlayStationand would eventually branch out onto other platforms as theSpyro the Dragonseries went on.However,Spyro the Dragoneventually faded from gaming following theLegend of Spyroreboot trilogy of the late 2000s, and the closest Spyro has gotten to a new game has been his supporting role in theSkylandersseries. In 2018,SkylandersdeveloperToys For Bob releasedSpyro Reignited Trilogy, a last-gen remake of the first threeSpyrogames that was met with mostly positive reviews and decent sales figures. Since then, fans have been hoping to see Spyro take flight once more in a brand-new adventure, especially after the success ofCrash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Timein 2020.RELATED:Study Claims to Reveal the 10 Most Popular Video Game Character TattoosMega-publisher Activision recently changed the banner on many of its social media accounts to include various properties under its umbrella, includingCall of Duty,Crash Bandicoot, andSpyro the Dragon. Twitter user SpyroUniverse took notice of this change, prompting many to speculate that Activision might havea newSpyrotitle in the works. Of course,Spyroisn’t the only franchise included in Activision’s revised social media banner, but some users have found it interesting that the famed purple dragon would be featured so prominently despite not headlining a game for the past five years.

There have been plenty of rumors about a newSpyro the Dragongame since the release ofSpyro Reignited Trilogy, though nothing official has been announced as of this writing and leakers have cast doubt on a sequel being revealed anytime soon. Earlier this year, Toys for Bobhinted at aSpyro-related announcementto commemorate the franchise’s 25th anniversary in the form of a social media image highlighting the studio’s upcoming projects - such as the multiplayerCrash Team Rumble.

Spyro’s inclusion in Activision’s new social media banner doesn’t necessarily mean that these rumors of aSpyro 4are true, though it is noteworthy that the publisher would choose such a currently inactive franchise to represent it. Fans have been waiting for a newSpyro the Dragongame since theReignited Trilogy, and Toys for Bob has proven its ability to revive an old series to great effect withCrash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. Only time will tell if the developer plans to do the same with Spyro, but the little dragon’s reappearance could be a promising sign of things to come.
