Although the title has been dormant for some time, there has been plenty of movement to suggest something aboutSkull and Boneswould soon be revealed. Indeed, that is the case – with Ubisoft recently giving fans a new look at the upcoming naval combat game. Players will take to the seas to raise their infamy, assemble their fleet, and complete missions around the Indian Ocean, with inspiration taken from theGolden Age of Piracy.

Skull and Bonesis a live-service multiplayer-first game, although everything can be completed in solo play. Players begin as a shipwreck survivor on a dhow and must work their way up through the pirate world. They’ll have access to three classifications of ships – cargo, navigation, and firepower – and can assault forts or other ships, hunt for treasure, go exploring, and more. It’s a pirate’s life truly, but Ubisoft wants to ensure that it’s a long-lived pirate’s life.

As a live-service game,Skull and Boneswill rely on the community and Ubisoft to keep the game content-rich after launch. It doesn’t seem Ubisoft is planning any sort of Battle Pass or anything like that, as it confirmed in the recent presentation that all post-launch content will be free. It seems Ubisoft is planning for years of support, complete with free events, ships, weapons, and more.

To what extent Ubisoft intends to expand its free content remains to be seen, but it does seem it intends to listen to the community. Game Rant recently spoke withSkull and Bonescreative director Ryan Barnard and inquired about how/if pirate mythology plays any role in the game. After all, theE3 2017 cinematic trailer featured a Kraken, but it seems those have been cut at some point during the game’s development. That doesn’t mean they’re completely out though, just not in at launch. As Barnard says,

“…We’re not to the point of a Kraken or anything yet, but who knows, it’s a live game. We intend to support the game for years to come and depending on engaging with our community, where they want to go and where we want to go, who knows what we’ll end up adding to the game.”

It’ll be interesting to see how players take to a realistic adventure on the Open Seas, and while many pirate fans may have had a wait on their hands, it won’t be for much longer.Skull and Bones’ release dateis only a few months away, meaning players will begin their rise to power soon enough.

Skull and Bonesreleases November 8 for PC, PS5, Stadia, and Xbox series X/S.
