As a relic of the Daedric Prince of Deceit, the Ebony Mail gives its wearer a set of effects that make it easier to sneak up on enemies and deal massive damage to them when combat starts – as long as the player stays in melee range that is. It’s a powerful piece of armor that rivals some of the best late-game gear, though it certainly has some drawbacks.
Ebony Mail Stats And Effects
The Ebony Mail inSkyrimis a set of Heavy Armor with a very high Armor Rating at a base value of 45. It can be tempered with an Ebony Ingot if a player has the Ebony Smithing perk, but its high defensemakes it pretty powerfuleven without improvements. Plus, it’s one of the lightest sets of Heavy Armor in the entire game, saving some valuable inventory space.

Its special effects are twofold. When the player sneaks while wearing the Ebony Mail they automatically gain the Muffle effect, completely silencing their movement – a strangely great enchantment for a Heavy Armor user. It also deals 5 Poison Damage to nearby enemies every second, which is a double-edged sword. On the plus side, thisadds up to a significant damage boostin drawn-out close combat. On the other hand, though, it deals damage toallnearby NPCs, so it’s very easy to get a bounty just by walking through a city while wearing this set.
How To Get The Ebony Mail
The Ebony Mail is the reward for completing the quest “Boethiah’s Calling”, which can be started at Level 30 at the minimum. Upon reaching this milestone, players can find a book titled “Boethiah’s Proving"throughoutSkyrimin several locations. The easiest to find are in Septimus Signus’s Outpost north of the College of Winterhold and the Abandoned House in Markarth.
After this, head to the Sacellum of Boethiah to the east of Windhelm. Bring a follower who you don’t mind killing along – after getting there, you’ll have to sacrifice a follower to speak with the Daedric Prince. Then, nearby cultists will attack the player, and after dispatching of them Boethiah sends the Dragonborn to kill her current Champion. Head to Knifepoint Ridge, just northwest of Falkreath, to find the Champion deep in the caverns in a large room. Slay him to find the Ebony Mail on his corpse, which you get to keep after talking to Boethiah one last time.
