ASkyrimfan has posted an image online of Faendal, found mysteriously dead on a road at the start of a playthrough. Faendal is one of the most recognizable NPCs inSkyrim, playing a role in some of the game’s early quests.

First released in 2011,Skyrim’s ability to stay relevant into 2023 remains impressive. With the fan community remaining engaged with the game, there’s no end in sight forSkyrim. Due to theextensive mods available for Bethesda’s classic RPG,Skyrimcould even maintain a steady player base well after the release ofThe Elder Scrolls 6. By then, players could be seeing graphics mods that rival the eventual sequel.

In the image posted by Reddit user Double_Volume7210, Faendal lies dead, holding his hand up at the player. It’s unclear how Faendal died, although it speaks to the strength ofSkyrim’s dynamic world, that NPCs can put themselves in harm’s way if they’re not careful. It makes the world feel more lived-in and consequential, essential for any RPG. It’s unclear if Faendal’s untimely demise is actually a glitch in-game. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise, asSkyrimis filled with weird NPC glitches. These types of glitches have become a part ofSkyrim’s charm, with every launch of the game a new opportunity to find a weird or wonderful bug. It’s inherent in a game ofSkyrim’s scale that there would inevitably be plenty of glitches. Luckily, most of the game-breaking issues have been patched out at this point.

Redditor Altoidman33 joked, “Sven had enough.” InSkyrim, Faendal and Sven are involved in the quest “A Lovely Letter” together, where they compete for the heart of Camilla Valerius.Skyrimis known for its amazing quests, and “A Lovely Letter” is one of the first that players can encounter in-game, which is why Faendal remains so familiar to many players.
