The game itself promises strategic, objective-based combat between two squads of iconicStar Warscharacters. Players can make thematic squads, like General Grievous and his bodyguard droids, or mix and match their favorite characters from across the franchise. Each character has special abilities and combat skills to influence the battlefield and accomplish objectives. ThoughStar Wars: Shatterpointwill most likely branch beyond it, the Starter Set seems to be full of characters featured heavily in theClone Warsanimated series, including Ahsoka Tano, Asajj Ventress, and Captain Rex, plusStar Warslegends like Count Dooku, Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker.

From its description,Star Wars: Shatterpointsounds like it will be a cross betweenStar Wars: Legion–a large-scale battle game–andMarvel Crisis Protocol, Atomic Mass Games’ superhero squad battle game. ThoughStar Wars: Shatterpointwill undoubtedly have its own spin on the formula, interested players should view the rules of these other battle games to get a feel for what to expect.Players should also brush up on their handicraft skills, as the miniatures forStar Wars: Shatterpointwill need to be assembled and painted.

Most fans agree it is the perfect place to start for a character-centric squad-based battle game, especially withStar Warsshows likeThe Mandalorianand the upcomingAhsokatapping into the lore and characters from the animated series.

However, some players are annoyed thatStar Wars: Shatterpointseems incompatible withStar Wars: Legion. The new game’s figures are slightly larger, are approximately 40mm scale, compared to the 47mm scale used by its mass battle predecessor, meaningLegionplayers won’t be able to use their existing miniatures inShatterpoint. These players will have to see howStar Wars: Shatterpointplays before deciding if it is worth investing in a whole new collection of miniatures, especially if they end up needing to buy the same characters for two different games.
