It’s safe to say that no matter which character was announced to be the final addition toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster, Sakurai Presents was going to be a big deal. However, the fact that it was the long-requestedKingdom Heartsprotagonist Sora brought joy to plenty of fans who had all but given up hope that he would join the fight. Following the major announcement and move breakdown for Sora, Sakurai updated viewers about the future of upcomingSuper Smash Bros. UltimateAmiibos.

The presentation showed off the mock-ups for the upcoming Steve and Alex statues fromMinecraftand announced that Amiibos for the rest of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, Sephiroth, Pyra, Mythra, and Kazuya, would be coming somewhere down the line. Notably absent from the list of upcoming Amiibos, however, was the freshly announced Sora. WhileSora’s omission from this Amiibo listfar from confirms that he won’t be given a collectible statue of his own, it has definitely given fans of the series pause, as they worry that he might not end up as an Amiibo at all. Although fans might be rightly worried, hopefully Nintendo realizes that Sora deserves an Amiibo just like everyone else.

Amiibos Are a Super Smash Bros. Tradition

When Amiibos were first introduced in the WiiU era, Nintendo made it clear that the company was going to make a statue forevery character featured inSuper Smash Bros. for 3DSandWiiU. By the timeSuper Smash Bros. Ultimaterolled around, the company had made good on its promise to include figures of each character, and fans were curious if they were going to do the same for all newcomers to the franchise withUltimate. As the company continued making new Amiibos for its characters, it was apparent that Nintendo was going to make statues forSmash Ultimate’s roster as well.

With the announcement that Sephiroth, Pyra, Mythra, and Kazuya will be getting their own Amiibos, the only character in the entire game that doesn’t either have an Amiibo already and is confirmed to be getting one is Sora. It would be a shame if he were to be left out, as collectors and fans of the character would likely buy his statue in a heartbeat. It takes one look at the internet’s reaction tothe announcement that Sora is coming toSmashto know that the demand for aKingdom HeartsAmiibo is certainly there. Still, whether it’s made or not looks like it’s going to be up to Nintendo, Disney, and Square Enix.

Potential Complications with a Sora Amiibo

As Sakurai alluded to in the presentation, getting Sora intoSmashwas something of a tricky task. Unlike the rest of theSmash Ultimateroster, Sora is associated with Disney, as theKingdom Heartsfranchise is inherently tied to numerous Disney IPs. Because of that, getting the rights to include him must have been challenging. As many fans have pointed out,all of theKingdom Heartscontent coming to the gameseems to exclude any of the established Disney characters like Goofy, Donald, and Micky.

Because of the issues associated with licensing Disney characters, Sora might have some problems getting an Amiibo. For example, the Micky Mouse ears that are essential to parts of Sora’s designmight be standing in the way of the finalSmashcharacter getting an Amiibo of his own. While Nintendo was able to get the character as a DLC fighter, it could be even harder and costlier to make any sort of merch with Sora’s design due to how tied it is to established Disney IPs. One solution would be to change some things for his Amiibo design, but with a character as iconic as Sora, there could be an outcry from fans who don’t understand the complications with the situation.
