Matt Reeves’The Batman 2is still on course despite changes at Warner Bros. Discovery. The Batmanhas the benefit of existing outside the main DCU canon, which gives Reeves more creative freedom and allows the director to continue making Batman films the way he wants to despite recent changes helmed by James Gunn.Since Gunn was hired as Co-Head of DC Studios, actors have been let go from iconic roles, films have been canceled, and a range of backlash has centered around the direction of the franchise, all to proceed withGunn’s plans for the DCU. Some leaks suggested Reeves’The Batmanfranchise would at some point interconnect with the DCU, but Gunn debunked those claims, which Reeves replied to by expressing trust in the new DC Studios Co-Head. Recent comments by Reeves seem to mirror this sentiment, as the director confirmed his involvement in moving forward with the sequel.RELATED:The Batman Villain Spinoff Projects Being Developed By Matt ReevesReeves sat down withColliderfor an interview about the 15th anniversary ofCloverfield. The director opened up about writingThe Batman2with Mattson Tomlin, who Reeves collaborated with on the previous film. He expressed his excitement for what they were doing regarding the writing process and working with Robert Pattinson again, who Reeves described as “a special person and actor.” Reeves also assured audiences that the villains would not take the spotlight as they have in previous film iterations, as the focus remains on Bruce Wayne. Thankfully, this means that the rogue’s gallery will have time to shine in spinoff titles, such as theupcoming seriesThe Penguinon HBO Max.

Not only isThe Batmansequel confirmedto still be on track, but the interview with Collider also puts fans' minds at ease, as it will continue down the path from the first film regarding character-driven stories that keep Batman in the spotlight. “My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story,” Reeves said. “Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”

Reeves did confirm that he has several scheduled meetings with Gunn this month to discuss plans, so this could be subject to change as the franchise continues. Even so, between themulti-year deal signed between Reeves and Warner Bros, and the constant assurance that hisBatmanfranchise will remain untouched, Batman fans can rest easy knowing that at the very least,The Batman2will be another director-driven film unscathed by studio interference.

The Batman2 is currently in development.
