The following article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 and potentially Season 2 of The Last of Us

It has been a week sinceThe Last of Usseason finale premiered, and fans are already experiencing withdrawals. To help negate the missing gap of a new episode this week, director Niel Druckmann had a plan up his sleeve. He took to social media on Sunday, the day episodes would be released on HBO, and shared an image teasing the arrival of a new and crucial character in season 2 of the hit series.

The first season ofThe Last of Uswas based entirely on the first game in the franchise. By that accord, fans assumed the next season would be based onThe Last of Us Part 2. However, the creators have confirmed that narrating the story ofThe Last of Us Part 2will require more than one season, which is good news for fans because it means there will be more than one additional season to arrive. But, the characters from the second game are bound to make an appearance in the next season, one of which is partly featured in the image Druckmann shared with fans.

Druckmann’s post reminded fans that there would be “no TLoU on HBO tonight,” but they need to be hopeful because “Season 2 is already on its way!” He ended the caption with theiconic phrase fromThe Last of Usfranchise, “endure and survive.” The image in the post is of a woman holding a hammer, but only her forearm and weapon are visible. Fans of the game will immediately recognize this as Abby Anderson’s arm, with the noticeable scar marks that were prominently featured in the game. The poster-like image confirms that Abby, the main antagonist and secondary protagonist ofThe Last of Us Part 2, will be introduced in the next season of the HBO series.

Abby plays a crucial role inThe Last of Us Part 2. After several time jumps, it is revealed that she is (spoiler alert) the daughter of the doctor that Joel kills at the end of the first game and season 1 of the HBO series. Considering how closely the first season’s plot was adapted from the game, fans assumeThe Last of Usseason 2 will stay true to the source material. It remains to be seen how much of the story will be carried to the live-action adaptation, but if the game is anything to go by, things are not looking good for Joel and Ellie in the coming seasons.

The Last of Usis one of PlayStation’s most popular franchisesover the past decade. The television series received a warm welcome from hardcore fans and new viewers alike and broke several viewing records on HBO with many of its episodes. It seems like the series has finally broken the video game adaptation curse.

The Last of Usis streaming on HBO Max.
