Insomniac Games should consider revisiting theResistancefirst-person shooter franchise on PlayStation 5. Insomniac Games is easily one of PlayStation’s most valuable development studios. It has already delivered two PS5 games since the console’s launch in 2023, the critically-acclaimedRatchet & Clank: Rift ApartandSpider-Man: Miles Moralesgames. Insomniac is currently busy working onSpider-Man 2and theWolverinegame, but it shouldn’t leaveResistancein the past.
Just as Insomniac was ready for the PS5 withSpider-Man: Miles Moralesas a launch title, it also had a big role to play in the PS3’s launch as well. One of the PS3’s biggest launch titles was a first-person shooter calledResistance: Fall of Man, which basically played like a World War 2 FPS with a sci-fi twist.Resistance: Fall of Manearned acclaim at the time of its release for its challenging campaign and its co-op and multiplayer options. It was successful enough to spawn a franchise that includedResistance 2,Resistance: Retributionon PSP,Resistance 3, and finally,Resistance: Burning Skiesfor the PlayStation Vita.

While the firstResistancewas a certified hit both commercially and critically, its follow-ups didn’t enjoy the same level of success. While they all earned positive reviews from critics (aside fromBurning Skies), they failed to generate nearly as much excitement from fans. This prompted Sony toturn off theResistancemultiplayer serversa mere three years after the launch ofResistance 3.
Why Resistance Would Be the Perfect Fit for PS5
Even though theResistancesequels didn’t get as much attention as the original game, it doesn’t mean that the franchise should be abandoned. While the CMA has blocked Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for now, it’s not being given up on, and there may still be a future where Xbox owns theCall of Dutypublisher. It’s possible Sony may eventually need an FPS of its own to replaceCall of Duty, and while it hasBungie working on things likeMarathon,Resistancemay do a better job of filling that potential void.
Fans should remember that while theResistancefranchisedidn’t exactly light the world on fire in terms of sales, most of the games were considered quite good, and some of the better PS3 exclusives available. Unfortunately, the only way for PlayStation gamers to experience most of the games at the time of this writing is by digging out their PS3 or PSP. Right now, the onlyResistancegame playable on PS5 isResistance 3, and that’s with the caveat that the online multiplayer servers are shut down, of course.

Resistance 3is still a perfect example of why theResistancefranchise deserves to make a comeback. Those that revisit it through thePS Plus Premium servicewill find a briskly-paced and hugely entertaining first-person shooter co-op adventure. The game boasts a nice variety of dangerous enemy types for players to contend with, a decent story, and an impressive arsenal of weapons that level up and evolve, taking new, more powerful forms. Each level inResistance 3introduces a new idea or has players exploring a vastly different location, ensuring that the game never feels repetitive or gets boring.
PlayingResistance 3will make one eager to see a new take on theResistancefranchise, but with the power of the PlayStation 5 behind it. The PS3Resistancegames already had incredible set-pieces and monster designs, and it would be great to see theResistanceChimera aliensrecreated with today’s graphical standards.
Resistance Collection on PS5 Could Help Fill the Void
Insomniac Games currently has its hands full. It’s gearing up to releaseSpider-Man 2later this year, and after that it will likely turn its full attention to itsWolverinegame. However, there’s no telling what Insomniac might be working on beyond that, so maybe fans will luck out, and the studio will return to theResistancefranchise. Fans shouldn’t hold their breath, though.
The sad reality is that it’s extremely unlikely that aResistance 4or any othernewResistancegamewill be made. And if one does materialize, it will likely be many years down the line. With that in mind, perhapsResistancecould make a comeback a little sooner through a remake or a remastered collection of the original trilogy. Such a project could help giveResistancenew life, even if it didn’t come with the versus multiplayer found in the original games.
Even ifResistanceremasters aren’t in the cards, it would be a shame if the other games never make it to PS Plus Premium. As previously mentioned, onlyResistance 3is currently available to play through PS Plus Premium, withFall of ManandResistance 2nowhere to be seen.PS Plus Premium needs more classic games, and theResistancefranchise definitely fit the bill.
For now, those wanting to playResistanceon PS5 will have to stick withResistance 3’s campaign. But hopefully Insomniac’s underrated first-person shooter franchise gets another chance to shine at some point down the line.
