World of Warcrafthas a long history of peculiar secrets, puzzles, and mysteries that players have unearthed over the years, andDragonflightbrings one of them to the pages of the Adventure Guide. Initially introduced as the Dungeon Journal in Patch 4.2 of Cataclysm, the Adventure Guide began as a convenient way for players to look up boss mechanics without having to tab out of the game. Two expansions later, it got transformed into its modern counterpart, and now covers more than justinstances inWorld of Warcraft, providing suggestions to players on what content to tackle next.

However, over the course of theDragonflightpre-patch, it also introduced a curious addition to its usual functionality: a single copper coin. By scrolling to the end of their Adventure Guide,World of Warcraftplayers were handed a copper coin as a quest reward, leading to nothing but a marginal increase to their wealth – or so they initially thought. The latest weekly reset seems to imply that thisWorld of Warcraftquest has more to it than meets the eye.

TheWorld of Warcraftplayers who found a copper coin in their Adventure Guide last week came across a silver coin this week. The mystery remains the same, and the players can do little but accept the free coin in much the same manner. If the data procured by Wowhead and recent developer interviews hold any weight, then this escalation will only continue in the weeks to come. Silver will turn to gold, and eventually will give the players a Shadowscrawled Coin.

This coin, in addition to being worth a hundred gold pieces, also comes with a note: “Thank you for the opportunity to observe you. The information I’ve gathered has been illuminating, to say the least. This will be my final gift… for now.” The note reveals little about the identity of its sender, and the coin’s description speaks of an otherworldliness, implying that it came from a place outside Azeroth (or Draenor).

An important thing to mention is that the Shadowscrawled Coin seems to be a perfect match with the Shadowscrawled Tome, which drops from the Brawler’s Guild and is associated with Shadreen, a mysterious void ethereal bearing the title of the Watcher. She can be found in the Telogrus Rift, and seems to have a vested interest in understanding howWorld of Warcraftplayer charactersequip themselves, as well as how they fight.

The implication here, provided it’s the correct one, is monumental.World of Warcraftplayers have been hoping for over a decade to see more of the ethereals and their unique culture. Thebrokers from the Shadowlandsoffered a similar take, but it didn’t quite resonate with players to the same degree outside of standouts like Ve’nari. ThoughDragonflightis firmly an expansion about the dragons, this opens the door to the possibility of the nextWorld of Warcraftexpansion being centered around the mysterious Void, a prospect that still excites most players.

World of Warcraftis available now on PC.Dragonflightlaunches on November 28.
