Konami has revealedYu-Gi-Ohwill be introducing a new Monster Type with the debut of “Duelist Nexus” later this year, the first new Type in six years. Monster Types form one of the backbones of the popular card game, categorizing its creatures intocard types like Dragon, Spellcaster, and Warrior, among others. While most Monster Types have been in the game since its launch over 20 years ago, Konami has occasionally introduced new Types like Psychic and Wyrm. To coincide with the debut of theYu-Gi-Oh VRAINSanime, Konami introduced the Cyberse typing back in 2017 with a plethora of Monsters based around the new season. The same set also introduced players to Link Summoning for the first time, marking the last time the TCG introduced an entirely new Summoning mechanic. The new Type will reportedly revolve around mythical monsters and illusions with inspirations from the classicYu-Gi-Ohmanga. Illusionist was a Type heavily utilized bybeloved antagonist Maximillion Pegasuswithin the manga, with beloved anime monsters like “Relinquished” first debuting as Illusionist cards. The Illusionist Type will debut in the Japanese OCG later this week, planned to come to the global TCG in July.
The new Illusionist Type will launch with a brand-new archetype of cards revolving around one ofYugi’s classic anime Monsters.Yu-Gi-Oh’s first support for the archetype revolves around “Chimera, the Flying Mythical Beast,” heavily used by Yugi throughout the original anime’s Battle City arc. The new cards feature powerful effects involving Illusionist Monsters with an emphasis on Fusion Summoning, with the Main Deck Monsters searching and reviving Illusionist Monsters. “Mirror Sword Knight” and “Cornfield Coatl” also debut as updated versions of formerly video game-exclusive cards.
Yu-Gi-Oh’s newest Monster Type comes as Konami has experimented with a wide variety of different ways for players to experience the popular card game.Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duelhas seen success as a digital platform for the traditional card game, featuring the same rules and mechanics as the original.
